Beck(y). Dork of the Week
Beck(y). Dork of the Week: Beck(y)'s got a mean fashion vengeance. Her determination and confidence is as edgy as her bags. Established in 2003, Beck(y) designed a collection of handcrafted, one-of-a-kind bags and accessories constructed with recycled skateboards and plush, high-end fabrics. I know it must appear that Dork is consumed with form and function, but the intersection of these two virtues provides so much sincere beauty that it's hard for anyone to deny. Beck(y)'s work exudes this collusion. Her functional art from recycled skateboards is too fresh.
Last week, Dork was able to catch up with Beck(y) to ask her our usual DoW questions. So, without further ado, we present this week's biggest Dork, Ms. Beck(y) Hickey. Peep the interview and pictures below.
DM: What's your passion?
To solve a problem that seems impossible to solve. I get so passionate about making something or designing something that is like nothing else I've ever done before.
DM: What keeps you motivated to create?
I see work that friends are doing, or will go see a film or a band that opens my mind and it just pushes me to do something creative. I just try to keep my eyes open and soak stuff in because it all adds up at some point.
DM: Who are some of your inspirations?
My dad. Somewhere along the line he taught me to never take no for an answer. He also taught me how to rewire an electrical outlet. And then i have a list of artists (film makers, musicians, painters or whatever) who just blow me away with their work and it keeps me moving.. wong kar wai, michel gondry, beck, modest mouse, ben tour, sam flores, swoon...

Beck is as real as they come. Glad she's getting some long overdue recognition. And wait 'til you see her new leather bags...hotness.
