Bobby Hundreds. Dork of the Week

Bobby Hundreds | Dork of the Week: Accessibility to people, art, and inspiration is important. Bobby Hundreds embodies this accessibility. In an era where exclusivity has been beating the snot out of substance, The Hundreds defy this new cool. They're bringing the balance back by presenting folks with fresh alternatives to the usual subculture couture.

The Hundreds clothing movement has serious substance. Their refreshing designs proudly rep the essence of street subculture, while their online publication is loaded with information that takes you behind the scenes of their efforts. Inspired by the California skate, hip-hop and punk scenes, The Hundreds are a brand setting new standards in these various worlds of expression. Dork was lucky enough to catch up with Bobby after his European tour. Check out his response to the usual DoW questions below...

DM: What's your passion?

Hmmm. Dude, that’s tough. I need to get warmed up for a question like that. Lemme come back to this one.

DM: What keeps you motivated to pursue your passion?

Aw man, I gotta answer the first one for this. Fine!

DM: What’s your passion?

Making stuff. And as much as I love to create, I also love to absorb and build off of what others create. Intellectualism, spirituality, and humor work great for conversation fodder, but at the end of the day, I’m either lying in bed reading something, or painting in a dark corner of my studio.

I’m not really sure what keeps me motivated to pursue my passion. I guess I just feel that I’d be wasting my life away otherwise. The worst feeling is going through an entire day without producing anything.

I’m not a design expert, a Pulitzer-Prize-winning writer, or a gallery artist, but I think those are my gifts, and I love what I do. Just the fact that I can pay my bills off this stuff is motivation enough.

DM: Who are some of your inspirations?

In terms of our brand, Shawn Stussy, Rick Klotz, Xlarge, T&C Surf, Alyasha Owerka-Moore, early ‘90s skate companies (Acme, Underworld Element, Alien Workshop, H-Street, Fuct, SCS, Blind), Paul Mittleman, Alife (Tony, Rob, Arnaud), Greenlady, Dickies, A Bathing Ape’s marketing prowess, Supreme, and Nike.

In terms of art, Futura 2000, Barry McGee, Jeff Soto, Craola, Warhol, Stash, Disney, Pushead, Pollock, Tiffany Bozic, Bill Watterson, Jim Lee, Kaws One, Deph, Jim Davis, Frank Miller, Murakami, Matt Groening, Mike Giant, and the guy who drew those creepy graphite drawings for those “Scary Stories” books.

Writing-wise, it’s an endless list. C.S. Lewis, Steinbeck, Kafka, Salinger, Rilke, Nietzsche. As of recently, Malcolm Gladwell’s “The Tipping Point” and “Blink” were pretty good. But last night, I finished a book by Khaled Hosseini called “Kite Runner” that was just ballistic.

DM: Favorite Song?

Of course I’m not gonna choose just one.

Refused “New Noise”
Farside “Audience”
Drowningman “And Clean Getaways”
Rod Stewart “Maggie May”
Pennywise “Unknown Road”
Earth Crisis “Firestorm”
R.E.M. “Night Swimming”
Kurupt “Who Ride Wit Us”
Shelter “Here We Go”
At the Drive In “Initiation”
El-P “Delorean”
Lifetime “Ostrichsized”
Zao “Exchange”
Get Up Kids “Stay Gold, Ponyboy”
Mineral “Dolorosa”
Radiohead “Anyone Can Play Guitar,” “Everything in its Right Place”
Steve Miller Band “Serenade”
Gorilla Biscuits “Stand Still”
Weezer “Jamie”
Big L “Ebonics”
Avail (anything off “4 AM Friday”)
Jimmy Eat World “Clarity”
Operation Ivy “Take Warning”
Promise Ring “Red Paint”
Guns N Roses “November Rain”
DJ Quik “Down, Down, Down”
Mr. Lif “Status”

…ok, I’ll stop now.

DM: Favorite Movie?

Chasing Amy (actually, every Kevin Smith flick), Karate Kid I, Plan B’s Virtual Reality, The Outsiders, Back to the Future II, Return of the Jedi, Debbie Does Blockhead, Fight Club, Suburbia, Powell-Peralta’s Ban This, Requiem for a Dream, Life as a House, High Fidelity…

DM: One thing that you can't live without?

My Muse. Oh, and Thai food.

Artist. Ethos Art Sale

Artist. Ethos Art Sale: Dork of the Week alum and super-radical human, Ethos, has put his latest show, Fun with Dead Bodies, online for resale.

The art above is by Tom Torluemke and is still available. Other artists included in this exhibition are: Thom Lesner, Andy Jenkins, Damion Silver, and Ethos (but I guess that's obvious). [Cop that ish]

Queue-Worthy. Guerrilla

Queue-Worty. Guerrilla: The Taking of Patty Hearst: It would be weird if Paris Hilton got kidnapped by a militant, fringe political group, bent on inciting the violent overthrow of the government. How insane would it be if Paris actually converted to her captors' cause and started robbing banks and ish? I think that Gawker and Stereogum would explode.

Well, that happened - okay it kind of happened. In 1974, teenage newspaper heiress, Patty Hearst, was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) and actually became a member of the group. Guerrilla is proof that truth is not only stranger, but way more interesting than fiction. Don't miss this. [Guerrilla]

On Newstands. Complex's Bonus Issue

On Newstands. Complex Magazine: The latest issue of Complex Magazine is on newstands now. You're probably thinking, wait the Pharrell jawn has been out for a minute. No, not that one. Complex released a bonus issue for the holiday buying season. There's a lot of good stuff in there. Cats like Sa-Ra Creative Partners and D. Marley hit you with their favorite in fashion and kicks. You can find Complex pretty much everywhere. They also have a great website [Here]

Post.Script: Oh yeah, I also meant to mention this a few weeks ago, Mark Ecko donated $10 Million in clothing essentials to the Katrina effort. I thought that was pretty ill. It's good to see these companies giving back.

Kicks. More Ubiq Updates

Kicks. More Ubiq Updates: Our favorite Philly boutique is hitting us with more updates. This week Ubiq has an array of new kicks coming in. The joints pictured above are the Adidas Metro Attitudes. I love Ubiq's description...

"They're called attitudes because only a certain dude with a certain steez could get away with wearing these. But my goodness, are those color combos perfect for each other. Add the snakeskins, it's a done deal." Check below for more flavor from Ubiq.

Weekly Re:Up & Dork Picturas!

Weekly Re:Up & Dork Picturas: Mr. T was the man. I know that's random. That's why it's a perfect opening to our updated picture section entitled Random Jammies. Sometimes cats mix James and I up, think we're other people, and definitely can't get us straight from the myspace page. ha! You name it and there's all kinds of confusion. But we like it that way. We're on some Doom/Ghost type stuff. Well, here's a chance to see a little further into the world of Dork. On the first page you'll find random pics from the summer months. The other pages range from our time at Space 1026 to Dork Parties to our radio appearance. Mad fun. Cold check 'em out in our new Features section on the right or click [Here]

Another week has zipped by and we're steady working on Issue #4. I think you're going to dig this jawn. We feel super proud of it. Our coalition of dope writers continue to crank out the freshness. Look for it to hit stands sometime around mid November. Until then peep this week's highlights below:

Designer Toys. Kid Robot's Muni Event

Designer Toys. Kid Robot's Muni Event: Write this down. On Thursday, November 3rd, Kid Robot will be hosting a super amazing charity event to benefit kids affected by hurricane Katrina. It'll take place in three cities - NY, San Fran & LA. Artists ranging from Jason Sui to Pharrell to Rhymefest to MIA to Dave White have custom designed their own muni figure for auction. It's going to be awesome.

For more information, be sure to check out the following link. You can also RSVP for the event there. In addition, we've got some advance pics for your viewing pleasure. They'll give you a sense of the fresh designs. I've personally got my eye on the ATCQ Muni. That's too fresh. [RSVP]

Art. Miriam Hitchcock

Art. Miriam Hitchcock: Lately, we've been loading up the posts on art. But, we'd be remiss if we didn't hip you to this artist. Miriam Hitchcock has an ill resume. Her work demonstrates a new outlook on mixed waterbase stylings.

Miriam's Forever series is an office favorite. You can catch up with her works at Pierogi, located in Williamsburgh BK [177 north 9th street, NY] You can also view another one of her works below.

Habitat. Dwell Prefab

Habitat. Dwell Prefab: I rarely take jabs at mainstream media - it's too easy. This is an exception. MTV Cribs has ruined the taste of an entire generation. They've convinced people that grandiose McMansions are the way to go.

Well, Dwell is trying to combat this by making the modern home affordable. Their mission is to make high quality, custom-designed, modernist prefabricated houses a reality for comsumers who yearn for the refreshing simplicity of modernist architecture. MTV Cribs, you've just been Punk'd. Ha! [Details]

Music. Ali | On My Greezy

Music. Ali | On My Greezy: If you are reading this, you are probably at work. They aren't enough songs about working. You know, the plain old 9-5. This seems a little odd because that is what most people do with their lives - work. Okay, there is that Vanessa Williams oldie, Work to Do. Remember those lyrics:

Ooh, I got work to do, I got work baby
I got work to do, I got a job yeah
I got work to do, said I got work to do

Well, Ali-Bey aka A. Greezy aka Greezy Monster, has a little diddy about the virtues of working hard. On my Greezy, is an abstract joint with an interesting blues feel. This tune will definitely take you out of your cubicle. [Listen]

Gear. Ropeadope's Moon Track Jacket

Gear. Ropeadope's New Moon Track Jacket: These guys are the greatest! There's a lot of designers out there, but very few capture the essence like Ropeadope. Not only are they a progressive music label who work with artists like Jneiro Jarel, they also have a clothing line. It's forward fashion that features folks like Pele, Jimmy Cliff and other rude boys.

The picture above is one of their latest features. It's the Ropeadope New Moon Track jacket. It's getting cold out there, so be sure to pick one up - maybe even two. [Store]

Art. Tim Reed's Fresh Canvas

Art. Tim Reed's fresh canvas: A few days ago a friend of mine told me about this artist's great work. Tim Reed has a unique style. There's something cool about his application. It's simple and bold. It never forces the issue. And for us, that's what makes it interesting.

Besides, when I came across his work, it was like it was speaking to me - literally. It was about 3am and I saw the picture below. Check it out.

Gadgets. Systm Vidcast

Gadgets. Systm Vidcast: I checked out the first four episodes of Systm and I have to say, it rocks. Systm is a downloadable how-to technology show for geeks. Each video provides in-depth coverage of a single project. If it requires soldering, modding, or reverse engineering, Systm's hosts, Kevin Rose and Dan Huard, can build it.

These dudes make some crazy stuff. I mean, in one episode they built a spy machine. In another episode, they made their own monster cables. The craziest project, involved the iPod Nano - they cracked that sucker open to see what it looks like inside. Coolio. [Systm]

Artist. Jon Brion

Artist. Jon Brion: You can call Jon Brion a lot of things, just don't call him a careerist. Brion's eclectic approach has given him the unique opportunity to do whatever he wants. There's nothing better than being able to work when you want, with people that inspire you. Whether it's producing songs for Beck, Kanye, and Fiona or scoring films like I Heart Huckabees and Punch Drunk Love - the motivation is always working with artists that he believes in.

Jon Brion discussed his career as a composer, record producer, and singer-songwriter with John Schaefer on WNYC's Soundcheck. It was intersting hearing Brion talk about using The Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ on We Major. I was also glad to hear that he disagreed with the critics that trashed I Heart Huckabees. Huckabees is a big fave among the Dork staff. Brion will be performing tonight at the Canal Room (285 W. Broadway). [Interview | Tix]

Gadgets. Blackberry vs. Nokia

Gadgets. Blackberry vs. Nokia: The Blackberry is a cool concept. But, it doesn't work for me. Although the email system is dope, the actual phone is no good. It never works. It drops calls and overall it's unnecessarily big. Perhaps some things shouldn't be all-in-ones. A toaster shouldn't be able to make coffee, and dare I say it, but a phone shouldn't be for email too. I know some people may hit my inbox with boos and hisses, but it's the truth. I need a regular phone. A joint where I can talk to Cool Russ or James without it cutting out.

Enter stage right the new Nokia 7380. It's small, compact and from what I hear has good reception. Who would think that we'd still be talking about reception in this digital age. Anyway, be sure to check out the T3 site and catch all the specs. They look promising, especially if you're not interested in reading email, listening to a gazillion songs and projecting holograms to your nearest buddy [Details | Photos]

Art. Shawn J. Period & Threadless

Art. Shawn J. Period & Threadless: Just when you thought it was finished, they reappear. Shawn J. Period is making a comeback. Last I heard, he had a family and left the beatmaking game behind, but it looks like the beatsmith is reunited with his MPC. I was always a big Shawn J fan - since the days of Rawkus. The other night the infamous Benji B played Shawn's latest track [Listen]

In other news, Threadless has resurrected a whole line of my favorite tees. The picture above is from a classic print BlandBand by Superswede. The colors are too funky, and who could front on the nostalgia of an old school cassette tape. The last couple of days I've noticed a lot of talk about cassettes. Well here's another reference for you analog addicts [Threadless]

Habitat. Nooka Watches

Habitat. Nooka Watches: I wish I didn't obsess about time. Some days I purposely leave my watch at home so that I can be in the moment - you know, maintain the present. But, it never works out. I just end up being late to everything. So, if I gotta be enslaved to my watch, why not rock it with style. The nooka watch pictured above adds a little flavor to the usual time piece.

Nooka is the brainchild of artist and designer, Matthew Waldman. In 1997, Matthew had a flash-back to a first grade math class while staring at a large wall clock in a London hotel and was struck by how few options there were for time display. He then sketched his ideas for potential designs on a napkin and brought them back to New York. After working on the designs, he submitted them to his legal team, and indeed, they were unique enough to patent! The linear and graphic representation of time with Nooka watches presents a more intuitive way to view time. Check them out [here]

Music. Oh No & Galt MacDermot

Music. Oh No & Galt MacDermot: Never short on innovation, Stones Throw is at it again. The label known for its provocative collabos brings you another team of funk. Oh No and Galt MacDermot are joining forces to reintroduce old school vibes with a contemporary twist. Although Oh No is well known in the underground circuit, this record has the potential to bring him some of the avant-garde acclaim enjoyed by Lib, Doom and Dilla. Check out these pics from a recent show where Oh made a few beats live [Here]

In addition, don't forget to read the following piece discussing Oh No and Galt's collabo: "Oh No is nearly half way done with a new production project based upon samples from the vast catalog of Galt MacDermot, best known as the man behind the music from HAIR. Oh No will also rap on the project, alongside a host of others including Posdnous from De La Soul, Vast Aire of Cannibal Ox, Jean Grae, Roc C, Aloe Blacc and others. Oh No and Galt MacDermot met recently at the composer's home in Staten Island, NY..." Read more [Here]

Queue-Worthy. Rock School

Queue-Worthy. Rock School: Paul Green is the "uberlord" and founder of the eponymous Paul Green School of Rock Music. This afterschool program teaches Philadelphia kids between the ages of 9-17, the how-to's of rock and roll (If that is not proof that Philly is way cooler than NY - I don't know what is). Paul Green and his students were filmed for 9 months, then some editor chopped up the footage, and out popped Rock School. A most awesome documentary.

Green is an intense guy. He pushes the kids hard, saying things like "if you mess up once I'll punch your face." He doesn't hestitate to tell the kids when they suck and he yells a lot. The kids seem cool with it. They're usually laughing at him. The DVD was just released and it is definitely worth checking out. [Rock School]

Events. Fafi Jam at Colette

Events. Fafi Jam at Colette: Those jackets are bananas. I wish we were in Paris for this one. Span of Sunset Inc. presents the ever so funky Fafi event at the world famous Colette. Some of you may have seen the Fafi exhibit at Semi-Permanent NY, if you didn't, you can catch a viewing of her work online or at this jam. Necessaries Toy Foundation and Fafi sculpted "Irina" just for the event. In addition, Dr. Romanelli and Fafi created 10 customized jackets for the Parisian exhibit.

The event kicked off yesterday and will continue til December. If you're in the Paris area, stop by Colette - 213 Rue St. Honore. If you're not in the Paris area, check out the following...

Music. Sadat X - What did I do?

Music. Sadat X | What did I do?: When I was a lil' man, I had an imaginary girlfriend. Hey, we aren't called Dork for irony's sake. Anyway, when the imaginary girlfriend and I had an argument, I'd be like, "baby, you gotta love me or leave me alone." She'd say, "sh*t James, you know I love ya." Yes Brand Nubian gave a lil' dun like me, a nugget of wisdom. When real girls finally started to appreciate my weirdness and were willing to be in relationships with me, I tried to use Brand Nu's advice. Unfortunately, they usually just left me alone.

Now Sadat X is back on the solo tip and he has some advice for his fans. Next time your girlfriend complains or gets upset for reasons you don't completely understand, just say, "what did I do?" Trust me, it will work way better than Shaggy's "it wasn't me." Sadat X is having an album release party tonight at Opus 22 (559 W. 22, NYC), no cover and open vodka. It is going to be a swanky affair, but don't stay out too late, or you'll be singing this song to your girl. [Download]

Film. Me and You and Everyone We Know

Film. Me And You and Everyone We Know: Experimental filmmaker, video artist and musician, Miranda July's, Me and You and Everyone We Know is out on DVD. It can be described as a film about the complexities of poop. Or better yet, the movie asks the question, how do you connect with others, when you are a weirdo?

Me and You can't be described. Watching it is truly an emotional experience. Trying to describe the plot or pointing out the movie's themes would just ruin it for you and make me sound like an idiot. I will tell you this, the movie is great. The world depicted in Me and You and Everyone we Know is strange and at times completely absurd, but the film's sentiment is more realistic and sincere than any other film I've seen in a long time (think Welcome to the Dollhouse). Get to know Miranda [Here]

Film. Bomb The System

Film. Bomb The System: My career as a graf artist was brief and pathetic. I remember trying to write 'Jazs' on the bleechers in high school and getting caught immediately. I had to clean all the graffiti in the gym because of that minor infraction.

I always thought about how cool it would've been to be a graf artist as a youth. You know, stealing spray paint, getting your name all over NYC, becoming infamous. But at the end of the day, I'm just a goodie-goodie, I'd rather watch someone else do it. Bomb The System gives us the chance to see what it is like to be a graf artist. Anthony 'Blest' (Mark Webber) is a talented and notorious street artist. He's torn between his street artist life and the possiblity of a normal life as an art student. When his crew gets beat up by the cops, they declare war on New York City, his decision becomes even harder to make. Bomb The System was recently released on DVD. Check it out, it is definitely queue-worthy.

Habitat. Urban Outfitter's Fall Collection

Habitat. Urban Outfitter's Fall Collection: Urban Outfitters takes it hits. We often hear people criticize it for being uber trendy, but forget that. Their stuff is dope. Out of all the places to shop in the states, it's one of the only jawns that gives you options (sans boutiques). Personally, I've found some treasures in there that I'm still rocking - now that says something. In today's cool today, gone "5 minutes ago" it's nice to see a place that serves up some low key pieces that have longevity.

So, now that old man winter is making a comeback, Urban is dropping their fall line-up. Be sure to check out their coats and jackets by Modern Amusement, Triple 5 Soul and Paul Frank. Catch wreck [Here]

Habitat. Ubiq Update | Nike and Evil Monito: Ubiq is on their game. With every week that passes they get better and better. This week's update includes new stock from Nike and other dope brands like Evil Monito. I was there on Saturday and the staff is mad cool - supa helpful. There's none of that hipper than hip stuff going on there.

Check out this description of Rickey's* collabo on some fresh socks that have a sneaker print on them: "UGP Underground Products and Evil Monito got together to present these half socks, half sneaker creations. We have the Shimabuku colorway which comes with the Evil Monito and UGP logos on opposite sides. Each sunk comes wrapped in tissue paper inside their own box. Because even after you take off your shoes you still like it when your friends ask you, 'Where'd you get those?'" [Details]

Biggie Duets & Weekend Re:Up

Music. Biggie Duets: It goes without saying that we all miss Biggie. The landscape of hip hop would be different if he were still around. While thinking of him we could play the "what if" game all day. But, if he were still around, I envision him perfecting his game similiar to Jay and the Black Album. You know, finding his stride, defining himself and working only to please his own artistic ambitions. I guess that's the sad thing, as dope as Biggie was, I don't think we saw the half. None-the-less he left us with a healthy amount of great music to check for... Be sure to get Biggie Duets, a new album being released on December 20. You can listen to one of the tracks, Breaking Old Habits featuring T.I. and Slim Thug [Here]

Meczilla. Dork of the Week

Meczilla. Dork of the Week: Meczilla is a multi-tasker, working in graphic arts and music. She fronts an electro-punk band, The Slack Republic. She is also the founder of a design firm called Stope Method Inc. where she blends the structure and composition of corporate design with the flare of street style. It is this merging of aesthetics that create a true presence and allows her clients, comprised of mostly urban artists and businesses, to compete on the corporate playing field. You have to check out the web design she did for J*Davey. Fiyah!

Meczilla is definitely a dork to know about. We asked her the usual questions and caught a few flicks. They're all below. When asked what inspired the style in which she works, Mec points back to her childhood in Brooklyn's Coney Island. She refers to it as an "enchanted slum". "I learned the beauty of dirt and graffiti in that place" [Slack Republic , Meczilla & Isstope]

DM: What's your passion?

Creating.

DM: What keeps you motivated to create?

Boys and candy. : ) But seriously? I find that envisioning the end result of your work is the kind of thing that can keeps me awake for 38 hours straight. Knowing that when I'm done and I've made that last mouse click, or that last pen or brush stroke, that it will all be worth it. That's what motivates me.

DM: Who are some of your inspirations?

Children, Ms. Wilona Woods (Good Times), Samo, Billie Holiday, Gordon Parks, Ms. L Boogie, Angelbert Metoyer, Michael Ray Charles, and people like you.

DM: Favorite Song?

Wow! You mean ever? No way I'm going to answer that! That is so not a fair question. I'll tell you what though... aside from all the shit I'm recording with my band, I'm really into XTC- "Senses Working Overtime" at the moment.

DM: Favorite Movie?

Um... The Warriors

DM: One thing that you can't live without?

Breathing, water, eating, and pooping aside? Um... my mac.

Nas. Death Anniversary

Nas. Death Anniversary: If you ask me Nas is the greatest rapper out. Sure he hasn't surpassed the brilliance of Illmatic (though The Lost Tapes comes close), but no one else has either. What Nas has done is remain relevant over his 13 year career. How has he done it? The beef with Jay-Z helped a lot, but more than that, his music has kept him at the top.

While other rappers use ill-conceived business ventures and sponsorship to stay in the public eye, Nas puts out well written songs. These songs don't always end up making his albums, but they exist. Death Anniversary is the quintessential street song. It is provocative, poignant, and vividly illustrated. Don't believe me? Cold check it [Listen]

Impulsive! Revolutionary Jazz Reworked

Music. Impulsive! Revolutionary Jazz Reworked: The Verve Music Group has been cranking out some really great music. Their latest endeavor, Impulsive! Revolutionary Jazz continues their streak of audible goodness. The album possesses a collection of reworked songs from jazz heavyweights such as Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie, Pharoah Sanders, and Yusef Lateef.

If you were into Madlib's Shades of Blue, then you'll probably dig this jam. Guest production includes the likes of SA-RA, Rza, Mark De Culve-Lowe and Prefuse 73. Check out a few tracks below and be sure to pick up the album on October 25.

The Shadow Conspiracy x Invisible:Man

The Shadow Conspiracy x Invisible Cruiser: Man would you look at that cruiser. It's so butter! Sorry, I can only use old school slang to describe something that ill. It is The Shadow Conspiracy’s latest project, a custom built 24” Cruiser, in collaboration with famed street cult label Invisible:Man (I:M).

"The Shadow Conspiracy, helmed by Ronnie B, is a BMX parts company which for the past three years has consistently introduced unique BMX hardware designed with creative themes of subversion. The Shadow Conspiracy is distinctly regarded within the BMX industry for their meticulous attention to detail, as shown within their projects and products, such as a patented BMX bike chain, finely constructed saddles, and their novel ad campaigns that constantly push the envelope in guerilla marketing..."

"In 1999, Andrew Lee launched Invisible:Man, which has since gained a notorious reputation worldwide. I:M is creating controversy within the high-end street market for its usage of raw graphics, dark themes, and innovative cut-n-sew. I:M has also released several collaborations with Stussy, Neighborhood, MadFoot!, and Es Footwear. The collaborative efforts of both parties in producing this custom engineered 24” Cruiser is not only a technical feat, but pushes the boundaries of high-end street fashion aesthetic and redefines the style of BMX sport. The finish on the Cruiser is matte black with black gloss decals – artwork by Andrew Lee."

Events. Arturo's Birthday Bonanza

Events. Arturo's Birthday Bonanza: Hitting up a party on a Monday is one the joys of living in NYC. When I moved back to NY two years ago, I partied from Monday to Thursday. I took the weekends off. Well that gets played out kind of fast. So I've gotten a little picky when it comes to Monday fiestas.

I had to hit the streets when I heard Dork homey extraordinaire, Arthur was throwing a bday bashment at Sway. Unlike a summer blockbuster, Arturo's party lived up to all the hype. Cosmo Baker and Low Budget held it down on the wheels and the drinks were flowing. You couldn't ask for a better night. Happy Birthday man!

Television. Degrassi Junior High

Television. Degrassi Junior High: If you're in your mid to late 20's and you grew up watching PBS (admit it smarty-pants), you have to remember Degrassi Junior High. It was one of the most realistic depictions of what life was like for young people, even if it was set in Canada. Spike got pregnant in the 8th grade. BLT got with Michelle. The Zit Remedy broke up. Shane lost his mind after taking acid. That's classic public television.

If you've never seen the show, check it out on The N. And, what is The N? I guess that's the newer hipper version of Nickolodeon. [Degrassi, Old School]

Music. Goapele's Mixtape

Music. Goapele's Mixtape: Goapele's single Closer is an office favorite. Dork's been a fan of her harmonies and refreshing production for some time. We're definitely looking forward to the release of her new album. In the meantime, I guess we'll have to enjoy her mixtape.

The mix contains remixs, old jams and new stuff that will hopefully create a buzz for her. One jawn that sticks out in particular is her version of Go by Common. I liked the original and her addition gives it a little more kick. Check it out [Go Remix f. Goapele]

Art. David Ellis

Art. David Ellis: I'm obsessed with analog gadgets. And... it may be a problem. There's something about static and phonographs that brings me a sense of comfort. Don't ask me to describe it, but for some reason it's a nice little zone of serendipity. Anyway, since analog is the jam, naturally I'd find David Ellis' work appealing.

My man places speakers, turntables and other analog gadgets in the most unique places. You might find a turntable installed in a tree trunk, or a speaker in a curvaceous casing. You really can't lose with this cat. He reminds me of a combination of artist - ranging from Nara to Brendan Monroe to the HVW8 cats. His work is mad inspiring. Check out his works at the 222 Gallery [here]

Music. O.C. (Not The OC)

Music. O.C. (Not The OC): "You lack the minerals and vitamins, irons and the niacin / F**k who that I offend, rappers sit back I'm bout to begin / bout foul talk you sqwak, never even walked the walk / More less destined to get tested, never been arrested / My album will manifest many things that I saw, did or heard about..."

Times Up is one of those rare songs that are timeless. It has to be amazing to create a song that becomes an actual philosophy for some. Well, O.C. isn't done creating classics. His new album, Smoke and Mirrors, is a pretty solid effort. The lyricism is still there. His style brings you back to an era when being street and being smart weren't considered incongruous. Check out this smooth banger from the new album [This is me]

Events. Dork Jam

Event. Dork Jam: It's Friday night and I'm packing my records, I'm about to hop over to Low Bar when I get a call from Taj. "James, every college student in Philly is heading over to NYC, all the trains are sold out." I was disappointed, but I wasn't freaking out. When I got to Low Bar and found out that the house was already packed at 8pm, I got a tad nervous. Luckily our homey Al held us down with a funky two hour set. I got super amped when he played Situation by Yazoo. I followed with a rock-infused Native Tounges set with a little MF Doom and Heavy D thrown in for good measure. Funkdigi held down the Mariano Rivera spot sealing the victory with Serato. Friday was a lot of fun and a huge success.

Well our next Dork Jam is going to be special. It is going to be Dork's first birthday! We are going to do it big. Okay not as big as Rev Run's daughter Angela, but big nonetheless. Taj will definetly be in the house for this one. I don't care if we have to fly him in by helicopter. Look out for more info soon.

Beck(y). Dork of the Week

Beck(y). Dork of the Week: Beck(y)'s got a mean fashion vengeance. Her determination and confidence is as edgy as her bags. Established in 2003, Beck(y) designed a collection of handcrafted, one-of-a-kind bags and accessories constructed with recycled skateboards and plush, high-end fabrics. I know it must appear that Dork is consumed with form and function, but the intersection of these two virtues provides so much sincere beauty that it's hard for anyone to deny. Beck(y)'s work exudes this collusion. Her functional art from recycled skateboards is too fresh.

Last week, Dork was able to catch up with Beck(y) to ask her our usual DoW questions. So, without further ado, we present this week's biggest Dork, Ms. Beck(y) Hickey. Peep the interview and pictures below.

DM: What's your passion?

To solve a problem that seems impossible to solve. I get so passionate about making something or designing something that is like nothing else I've ever done before.

DM: What keeps you motivated to create?

I see work that friends are doing, or will go see a film or a band that opens my mind and it just pushes me to do something creative. I just try to keep my eyes open and soak stuff in because it all adds up at some point.

DM: Who are some of your inspirations?

My dad. Somewhere along the line he taught me to never take no for an answer. He also taught me how to rewire an electrical outlet. And then i have a list of artists (film makers, musicians, painters or whatever) who just blow me away with their work and it keeps me moving.. wong kar wai, michel gondry, beck, modest mouse, ben tour, sam flores, swoon...

DM: Favorite Song?

Cat Power - Good Woman

Modest Mouse - Shit Luck

DM: Favorite Movie?

In The Mood For Love (Wong Kar Wai)

DM: One thing that you can't live without?

Coffee. Oh, and a good strong hug now and then.

[For more information about Beck(y) and her bags, check out Beckycity.com]

Music. Santana AY!!!

Music. Santana AY!!! So I went to Juelz Santana's listening party last night. I've got to say Juelz really knows how to throw a bashment. Not only did he play his new album, What The Games Been Missing, he made sure that we all had some champagne to drink. That’s a cool dude right there. I mean, I have good friends that won't buy me a drink.

Well the album is pretty good. Most of it is what you'd expect from Juelz, great beats, rhymes and some tough talk. The surprises make the album a stand-out. Postman sounds like the kind of pop record you wish more rappers would make. He really has fun with that track. On Good Times, (I think that's the song's name) he gets sentimental and remembers simpler times. Daddy, is about being there for his son. The hook goes like this: “I got a little boy to look after and if I die then my child will be a bastard.” We are big fans of anyone that can drop a Geto Boys reference in their song. Santana's album drops November 22. I predict that he'll have all the kiddies yelling “AY” by Christmas.

Film. Innocence

Film. Innocence: It is uncommon to see a film as disturbingly provocative as Lucile Hadzihalilovic's Innocence. It is minimalist in every conceivable way. The dialogue is sparse. There is virtually no background music. All the noise is natural. You hear the clocks, water, creaking floorboards, even the insects in the forest. The light you see is daylight, no artificial lighting was used. Watching Innocence is like watching a lotus bloom. It is a slow nuanced process and the beauty can only be appreciated through patience.

Innocence is an adaptation of the short story Mine-Haha, or The Corporal Education of Young Girls by German playwright Frank Wedekind. The story involves a group of young girls that are cut off from men and society in general, living in some odd utopia where they can blossom without the pressence of boys. Their “school” is a paradise and prison at the same time. When asked what she hope audiences will experience, Hadzihalilovic said:

This film is like a small theatre that I'm inviting people into. I hope they will be charmed and that they'll enjoy remembering it afterwards. The idea was to make an appealing work, for people to be able to slip into the girls' worlds and create their own film. As a spectator, I like films that take you into a particular physical world by playing on sound and sensorial perception. Similarly, I wanted to offer audiences an emotional experience.

Innocence opens October 21 at Cinema Village in NYC. This is easily the most original movie I've ever seen, don't miss it!

Literature. A Man Without a Country

Literature. A Man Without a Country: Kurt Vonnegut is a challenging thinker. His views are radical. For example, he believes that the planet's immune system is trying to get rid of humanity because of all the damage we've caused to the environment. What seperates Vonnegut from other harbingers of gloom and doom is the fact that he can talk about all the horrible things humans do and make you laugh about it. And then you realize that things aren't that bad.

In an excerpt from his new book, A Man Without a Country, he makes an interesting argument about our imagination being useless in this modern world:

"The imagination circuit is taught to respond to the most minimal of cues. A book is an arrangement of twenty-six phonetic symbols, ten numerals, and about eight punctuation marks, and people can cast their eyes over these and envision the eruption of Mount Vesuvius or the Battle of Waterloo.

But it's no longer necessary for teachers and parents to build these circuits. Now there are professionally produced shows with great actors, very convincing sets, sound, music. Now there's the information highway. We don't need the circuits any more than we need to know how to ride horses. Those of us who had imagination circuits built can look in someone's face and see stories there; to everyone else, a face will just be a face."

For more of Vonnegut's incisive social commentary, make sure you check out his interview on the PBS program NOW, he also gave a great interview on Real Time With Bill Maher, and of course, buy the book. Until then, check out this interview from NPR [Here]

Habitat. A Cook's Tour of Italy

Habitat. A Cook's Tour of Italy Joe Famularo is a well-traveled food writer, penning articles for Gourmet and Bon Appetit. A Cook's Tour of Italy is the tenth cookbook written by the prolific chef. This excerpt from the book's introduction should make you curious:

Going to Italy reminds me of how we should be eating (and living) in the United States. Italians seem to be more passionate about their food. They market daily, talk about food all the time, spend time in the kitchen, even close their shops to devote three hours a day to eat lunch. For them, eating is a simple pleasure, and eating the Italian way delivers a better quality of life. No one expects our lunchtime to increase, but I think there is agreement that most of us want (many crave) the Italian eating experience at home.

A Cook's Tour of Italy contains more than 300 authentic recipes from the regions of Italy and will be in bookstores November 4. [cop that ish!]

Film. New York Doll

Film. New York Doll: I believe in reincarnation. Over the course of one's lifetime they are several distinctly different people: a baby, a student, a parent. The only constant is that intangible essence that makes a person an individual. The life of Arthur Kane is the perfect example of this. The documentary New York Doll chronicles the path of Kane. Today he is a 55-year-old, pocket protector wearing, soft spoken guy that rides the bus to and from his job at the Church of the Latter Day Saint's Family History Center library.

Thirty years prior, he was known as “Killer Kane,” the wicked bass player of 70s androgynous, glam rock band, The New York Dolls. The Dolls' impact on the punk generation, was huge. You could argue that the Dolls single-handedly changed the course of rock music. Their lifestyle of hard partying, drug and alcohol abuse was ultimately their undoing. In 1975, after releasing their second album, Too Much Too Soon, they broke up. Over the years Arthur battled alcoholism, married, divorced and obsessed over his ephemeral taste of celebrity. Eventually, Kane beat his addiction, converted to Mormonism and got a job with the Mormon Church as a librarian. He never gave up hope that his old friends could put aside the past, rekindle their relationship and return to glory. When the improbable happens and rock star Morrissey gives the surviving members an opportunity to reunite and perform at London's Meltdown Festival, his dream is realized. Will it work? Can they get along after all these years? Even if they can will it matter? Hey you've got to see the film to find out. New York Doll opens in New York (Angelika Film Center) and Los Angeles on Friday, October 28. Check for it.

Audio. Dream Merchant

Audio. Dream Merchant: Yesterday was a crazy day. Mad work to be done, but we drudged through. At the end of it all we needed to crank something that would subside the aches of grinding. This early Little Brother track seemed to do the trick.

Dream Merchant is classic LB demonstrating early jedi maneuvers from 9th and his Fruity Loops software. As usual, Phonte skates along the beat as if it's second nature - like it was meant to be. But the most classic moment is at the very end when Phonte says, "because you get an F- for your poor performance." ha! That reminded me of the time when James, Russ and I were clowning about GI Joe and Destro's famous line - "You are a world class baffoon!" Remember when he used to say that to Cobra Commander. hhhhhhaaa! Alright I've lost it. I'm out. Til tomorrow. [Download | Dream Merchant]

People. Henry Gets Paid!

People. Henry Gets Paid: Arsenal is the futbol club de jour for Dork. There's no one better - pirry odd (c) Phonte. When we heard that Hova may throw some duckets into the Gunners' pockets, we were excited. Hopefully he'll be able to contribute to this upcoming investment...

Theirry Henry, the greatest futboler on the planet (all objectivity has been lost), is about to become the highest-paid player in the history of the club. Although he's put contract talks on hold til the end of the season (summer), it appears that Arsenal is prepared to pay the Frenchman more than $140,000 per week to remain at Highbury. Word!

Gadgets. PSP Store opens in Tokyo

Gadgets. PSP Store Opens in Tokyo: Yet another reason to move to Japan. Sony launched a PSP store in Tokyo. This isn't your regular gaming store. It boast some interesting features and experiences for the PSP gamer in all of us. For example, the new Sony spot, located in Tokyo's Ginza district, provides downloads of game demos via Game Sharing and Wi-Fi.

We're looking forward to the opening of more PSP spots. The game sharing and Wi-Fi functionality appears to be a strong draw for consumers. Sony introduced this method of downloading for the first time during the Tokyo Game Show 2005 and saw heavy use and public interest. As the PSP continues to draw more fans and media support from power houses like Columbia Pictures, we're expecting to see more innovations in the future for the Sony PSP.

Habitat. New farther reaching WiFi!

Habitat. New farther reaching Wi-Fi: If you're anything like us, you can't remember a time before Wi-Fi. Who'd want too? Being an Illadelphia resident, I'm looking forward to the city wide Wi-Fi. Until then, I'll enjoy the quiet hum of the 802.11g radiowaves eminating from my airport base. But wait, there's some additional news in the queue. Red Herring is reporting that a group of 27 wireless companies has decided to end a potential standoff over the next generation of Wi-Fi by forming a coalition to push one standard. Yes!!! Coalitions are a good thing.

The Enhanced Wireless Consortium (EWC), will work on developing a faster, wider-ranging Wi-Fi standard. Hopefully something the thinking heads in Philly will pick up for their city wide initiative. Who knows, Google may even adopt it for their gradual but sudden take-over starting in San Francisco. "Members of the group include big-name companies such as Apple, Intel, Broadcom, Cisco, and Sony. The 802.11n standard is expected to be up to 10 times as fast as the current Wi-Fi standards 802.11a, b, and g, according to the companies that announced the group on Monday."* We're definitely looking forward to it.

Film. Dave Chappelle: For What It's Worth

Film. Dave Chappelle | For What It's Worth: Okay, I'm a little late with this. I'm sure a lot of people already saw Mr. Chappelle live on Showtime last year. Hey, I don't have Showtime, so this was new to me. I think that part of the enjoyment, in watching For What It's Worth now, is the fact that Chappelle's Show is officially dead and no one is expecting a comeback.

There's been a myriad of explanations about why Chappelle left Comedy Central. We've heard everything from a government conspiracy to Chappelle losing his mind Lauryn Hill style. I think its all a load of manure. Chappelle simply got tired of being a celebrity. He said, “I can't be no celebrity, this sh*t is the worst...I see why stars are crazy.” It's weird that people were shocked that he would turn down $50 million and the chance to be in our living rooms on a weekly basis. Is $50 million worth the embrassment of walking around with your children and having every single idiot yell “I'm Rick James bitch!”

I don't know if Dave Chappelle's humor has a place in today's kid-friendly ultra politically-correct mainstream media. At their best, comedians are social critics. They say things that people are too scared to admit and they turn tension into laughter. With fame comes expectation and I think he got so famous so fast that he had too many people to please. I'm glad that Chappelle called it quits. A good comedian knows that you have to leave the crowd wanting more.

Mags. Versus Magazine SF #2

Versus Magazine SF #2: Over the weekend, the Dork offices received Issue #2 of Versus Magazine – an independent lifestyle magazine based in San Francisco. Upon reading the letter from the editor, we knew this was a publication with integrity. They’ve taken substance and used it to propel the magazine’s value and form into the hearts of anyone who reads it. Check out the following excerpt. The editor is discussing how the masses are supporting events and artists based on perceived imagery rather than content:

“Across the board the best sh!t going on in the city right now is all of the sh!t that people aren’t really trying to see or hear. I’m tired of the first question about an event being “how many people were there?” If you’re not the promoter, somebody the promoter is paying, a bartender, or the owner of the club why do you give a f*ck how many people were there! Can’t get drunk or enjoy a show with your friends?” [Details]

eThos. Dork of the Week

Dork of the Week | eThos: This week's dork is not only a kind individual, but also a master of expression - no matter what the medium. You might see it in his humor, or through his works. Nothing that eThos does lacks expression. Originally hailing from Oklahoma and currently living in between Brooklyn and Chicago, eThos grew up on the Osage Reservation. He draws much of his influence from the haunting images of old Indian graffiti which dominated the area. And now, much of that influence is reflected in the primordial nature of his work which depicts the struggle between nature and man.

Check out our homeboy, eThos - Dork of the Week. Pictures and questions are below. And, if you want to see him in person, he'll be curating the Right Place Wrong Time Event at the Transport Gallery, starting October 15 [Details]

DM: What's your passion?

My passion? My passion is in saying this, the best way to live is by not knowing what will happen to you at the end of the day, when the sun goes down and the seeds are done being planted, the fruit that florishes and the supper that is to be cooked.

DM: What keeps you motivated to create?

The sound of a guitar being plucked at 12:12 am on a windy night in Madrid. A conversation in Rome being translated into sign language by a man and his seeing eye dog. Empty Tokyo streets at 3am with a can of paint. Motorcycle drives from Canada to Mexico on US-101. An empty studio, ethnobotanicals / the unfolding inner alchemy within Folklore and Mysticism, a touch of a woman, oh and constantly traveling while always arriving which brings me to the process of it all.

DM: Who are some of your inspirations?

Chris Miller ala concrete hussle, Tom Torluemke with the watercolours brilliance, Futura and his seamless vitality, Picasso, Muhamad Ali, Hendrix, and Black Elk’s wisdom.

DM: Favorite Song?

I don't do favorites well, I feel like I should be making one of those origami puzzles where you either get the choice of living in a mansion or a shack. Ok let's say this, something in the middle of Miles Davis "In A Silent Way, It's About That Time", Yo-Yo Ma's Air "On the G String", and whatever Scott Herren produces with his gold teefa's.

DM: Favorite Movie?

Baraka by Fricke at the moment, but let's say I wouldn't turn down a collaboration with either David LaChappelle or Martin Scorsese.

One thing that you can't live without?

Travel, definitely travel. Oh and my kidneys, I can use those for all the brews I consume after the day is threw.

peace. taj

Musings. Just another boy on the IRT

Musings. Just another boy on the IRT: When you've grown up in New York it's hard to romanticize it. All you see is trash, crowds, and chaos. Especially on the train. I've seen the craziest things on trains: people making out, a guy throw up, and lots of other stuff I don't want to remember. Which is sad in a way.

The thing I love about art is that it proves there is beauty everywhere. I mean, we're all told what beauty is and we believe it. But an awesome picture says, "you're wrong, this is beautiful!" And who are we to argue with a talking picture? Okay, I know that didn't make much sense, but check these pics and you'll know what I mean. [Details]

Gadgets. Apple Announcements

Gadgets. Apple Announcements: Could Apple be set to change the way we consume media? It looks like October 12 promises to bare another innovative announcement from our friends at Apple. Many sources on the web have conflicting views of what the announcement will entail. Will it be a video ipod*, or just some upgraded powerbooks*? Who knows! But we're excited. It's time for Apple to shake up the industry once again. It's competitor's are beginning to wake up.

Here in the Dork Offices, we've been saying that the ipod is cool, but if the Sony PSP ever came with a built in flash-based hard drive, it could bury the ipod over time. And, it could probably do so with less than 5 gigs of memory storage built in. Just consider, currently for $250 you get high quality movies, games, photos and music all in one. Watch out Apple. You may be dominating now, but I hope this announcement is big because others are looking to cut into the market. (Or maybe I'm just a PSP fanboy. ha!) **Late edition edit - Check [this & this]

Kicks. Sneaker Freaker: The Book

Kicks. Sneaker Freaker | The Book: When I was in 7th grade I was a member of the notorious sneaker crew, The Air Posse. Jelani wore the Agassis, Edwin always had the freshest pair of Jordans, and I...I wore the Air Pegasus. Hey those were the only Nikes my mom would buy me. Maybe that's why I have a complex now and I still go crazy for sneakers like a 13 year old.

The Air Posse could've used a fine publication like Sneaker Freaker. I could imagine us fighting over SF the way we used to fight over Eastbay catalogs during lunch. Okay, enough nostalgia, I was giving myself a toothache. For those of you who haven't checked out SF, good news, they're releasing a book this November. It is 320 pages of sneaker goodness, including content from the first six issues plus brand new ish. Highlights include 100 of the best custom sneakers in the world, a how-to guide written and illustrated by Sabotage, and extensive tips on spotting bootlegs. That's what's up! Air Posse, transform and roll-out! Ha! [Details]

Film. What's Your Big Idea?

Film. What's Your Big Idea?: Everybody thinks they have the next Oscar winning movie in their head. Well at least I do, and I'm sure you do too. Getty Images is giving us the opportunity to become upstart filmakers!

The Next Big Idea (TNBI) is a peer-juried, short-film competition. There are three stages: pitch, rough cut and final cut. Pitches can take the shape of a finished piece, animatic, style frames, storyboard or, simply words. As part of the project, TNBI registrants will receive complimentary imagery (film clips and stills, five of each). The images can be used to get ideas flowing for TNBI or whatever – they're yours whether you participate as a filmaker or a critic. Pitches are due November 4, 2005, so get crackin'! Audio. Brick City Kids

Audio. Brick City Kids: This morning we were experiencing some technical difficulties, so if you saw this picture before we were ready, we apologize. The Brick City Skate shop is a classic joint located in Florida. But, seeing this pic reminded me of our aspirations here at Dork to start our very own skate team. Right now it's just Cool Russ and I, but we're growing - slowly but surely.

So! without further ado we announce the pre-pre-pre-announcement of our dreams to open a skate shop / skate team. We won't be called Brick City but if we were, this would be our team song. [Brick City Kids | Download]

Book. Weird Science: The New Evolution

Weird Science | The New Evolution: We all believe that amazing technological advances are on the horizon. Like, if I argue that the internets will take over every aspect of modern life, in about forty years, I doubt people would disagree. Well what if I argued that forty years from now humans and their technology will become one? This phenomenon is what scientist Ray Kurzweil forecasts in his new book "The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology."

Kurzweil foresees human intelligence vastly outstripped by computer intelligence and then wholly merged with that intelligence. All within the next forty years. This merger of genetics, nanotechnology, and robotics will make humans godlike. Kurzweil has an interesting conversation with Tom Ashbrook of Boston's NPR about this topic. Listen for a phone call from international chess champion David Levy! [Details | Website]

Music. HVW8 Installation Crew

Music. HVW8 Installation Crew: Our affinity for HVW8's art is no mystery. We've talked about these cats in past posts. Their imagery is bananas. However, this time 'round they're bringing a batch of audible goodness to the party. GrooveAttack, has a nice write up about them discussing their latest release and the future endeavors of the crew:

"Following up on Ubiquity’s much hyped "Music Is My Art" 12" from late Spring 2005 is the full-length compilation of the same name and eclectic musical vibe compiled by the Montreal/Los Angeles-based HVW8 Art Installation crew. "Music Is My Art" is an album of next level electronic, soul and hip hop from around the world. Most of the tracks that appear on "Music Is My Art" were recorded exclusively for this release and capture the cross-section of worldwide talent that work closely with the collective." [Read more]

Designer. Dixon Baxi

Design. Dixon Baxi: Designing for clients is hard. It's even harder when you're presenting cutting edge designs or work that is outside of the trend. However, some designers have work that is so clean and concise that this process is made easier.

Dixon Baxi is one of those designers. Baxi's work can go from nice lines and clean edges to kollage style orientations. His work uses bright colors when necessary and demonstrates a range of abilities. Whether you need a dope flyer, business card or graphics for your cable station - He'll rock it out. Art. VanBeater & Space1026

VanBeater: This cat has one of the coolest sites hands down. When someone recommended that we check out his art, I knew it was going to be fresh. The convo went a little something like this, "Yo! Have you seen the Deadly Ninja Assassin Rapper's art work?" We hadn't and now we have. DNAR aka VanBeater is the truth. His works display a level of fun that most people aren't fortunate enough to retain past youth. I know I'm fighting to keep my fun outlook. Cold check his [Here]

Space 1026 | This Friday: Speaking of art, we wanted to remind illadelphians about this Friday's installation at Space 1026. Jamie Dillon and Nick Paparone present Everest - A documentation of their climb to the world's highest peak. Jamie & Nick's collaborative work explores the notion of achievement while making the impossible possible. Check out Everest, this Friday October 7 @ Space 1026 [Details]

New Bag. Genevieve Gaukler @ Busy-Being

Genevieve Gaukler @ Busy-Being: A few months ago we profiled the online store Busy-Being. It's one of the best online destinations for dope art products. This week, they have the latest designer bag from Genevieve Gaukler. This Boston Roll Bag is great for overnight travels and can hold all the essentials.

In addition, the design is sick. The GG x Medicom collabo demonstrates a bit of flare that can't be denied. It's made from a durable canvas with some nice stitch work. There's a full pic of the bag below. Buy it from Busy-Being [Here]

Music. Kanyeezy on SNL

Video | Kanyeezy on SNL: James and I were just talking about how fresh Kanye's performance was on SNL. I watched it with my Mom and her description was so on point, "There's something about Kanye that is cool. He's arrogant, but you don't mind - unlike that other guy, Usher. He's just obnoxious." Zing! Good one Mom.

Anyway, just in case you missed it, you can peep the performance here. Dork would like to extend a big thanks to the human TiVo, Jose3030. To keep costs down for him, we've decided to host it. So please download it once, if you download it a gang of times, it may take down our site. Bandwith is a beast. ha! Also, don't forget to support Jose. [Watch | Donate to 3030]

Art. Don't mess with James Jarvis

James Jarvis | In Crowd Wrestling Federation: Please don't cross James Jarvis. If you do, you might get smacked by the In Crowd Wrestling Federation (the cats pictured above). They're a mean looking bunch. I wouldn't test them.

The In Crowd Wrestling Federation will be available in November 2005 and is the 10th set in the James Jarvis-designed In-Crowd series. It features seven original figures, including Lord Humungous himself. Sweet! [Get 'em]

Art. Hugo Broche & the Art Dorks

Art Dorks Run Wild: Word up. Dorks unite! Now don't get us wrong, we never thought we were the only dorks out there, but it's nice to see our dork-fam represent so well. If you've never been to Art Dorks, go now [Here]

As we were perusing the jawn, we noticed that they had a gallery from one of our recent favs, Hugo Broche. His work is pictured above. If you like expressive, bold lines and bright colors, we strongly suggest his work.[View]

Photogs. Jeff Harris

Everyday Photography by Jeff Harris: Minimalism is often the best way to frame substance. Jeff Harris' site is a testament to that. Jeff has had his picture taken, along with visions from his life, for the past 6 years. Each day, he's posted a different picture on his site. Each flick vividly captures varying moments of his day-to-day existence with humor, sadness, beauty and stillness.

Viewing this site makes me miss my camera something serious. But, trust me, the old sony and I are preparing for a comeback - Eagles* style. Watch! Oh yeah - this post was about Jeff, not my cam. Cold check 'em [Here]

Mags. New Scratch Magazine on Stands

New Scratch Magazine on Stands: Coolio! One of our favorite magazines is being distributed more frequently. Scratch Magazine is on news stands now. Although slightly thinner, the publication is still packed with just as much substance as before.

This month's edition has dual covers - one gracing Swiss & the other with JD (not dilla). Inside you'll find words regarding 9th, Kanye, Pete Rock and the DangerDoom duo. Check it out. The editorial piece is quite interesting as well. Homeboy illustrates the rings and hoops of the magazine industry.

Art. Go Outside in the Sun

Go Outside: This weekend, Small Professor and I finished moving all the dork audio equipment to a new location. The set up is looking pretty good. When we finally got everything plugged in and cleaned up, I got this email from Mr. Robin. It was entitled, Go Out In The Sun. He couldn't be more right. It was a beautiful weekend, so that's what we did. Check out his clever site and ill art work [Here]

Monday Morning Audio: Here's a little Mos Def to start off your week. You can't hear this song and not feel good. We hadn't heard it in a while and when it came on this morning it set things off! Cold Check it [My Vibration]
