Fresh Photog. Seth Kushner

Fresh Photog. Seth Kushner: We've been meaning to give this guy props for some time. It's been way too long and we apologize. Seth Kushner is one of the dopest photogs out. You may have seen his work in the New York Times, Mass Appeal or Maxim. And this month, he was kind enough to lend his photographic eye to issue #4 of Dork.
Seth took the photos for the John Carluccio article written by Michael Variano. As a self professed pop culture addict, he captures everyday life with stunning flare. His range of subjects demonstrates his skill and dedication for the artform. Be sure to check out his site to see his other work. [Website]

Queue-Worthy. Melinda and Melinda

Queue-Worthy. Melinda and Melinda: Let me tell you a story, and you tell me, is it material for a comedy or a tragedy? This is the question a writer asks his colleagues during a late dinner in Woody Allen's latest film, Melinda and Melinda. The writers take up his challenge and the film diverges into two seperate films, one comedy and one tragedy.
Both films star Radha Mitchell as Melinda, a woman who crashes a dinner party, spilling details about her drama. Melinda and Melinda is an exploration of perspective. It is odd that two people can hear the same story, yet come up with two completely different fictionalizations that trigger different emotions. If that isn't enough for you, Will Ferrell's performance as a Woody Allenesque character is friggin hillarious - you have to see this film.

Info. A Brief Intermission

Info. A Brief Intermission: First Pharrell's album is pushed back till February and now this... We're finishing up some cool treats for our viewers (contests, part 3 and other goodness) so stay tuned. I know we've slowed down the post rate, but we'll be back in full swing tomorrow.
The holiday was good to the Dork staff. There's nothing like Mom's cooking and a bunch of fam trading stories. Anyway, it's back to work. Thanks for your patience and positive emails! Until tomorrow mi amigos...

BeatMaking. Wajeed & Red Bull Music

BeatMaking. Wajeed & Red Bull Music Academy: The Red Bull Music Academy is one of the best executions of a great idea I've seen in recent memory. RBMA is an event that travels the world bringing together folks who are creating music with professionals in the field. They've had people like Madlib, Egon, A-trak, Amp Fiddler and others. It's a great musical opportunity if you have the chance to apply and attend.
Most recently they posted a tutorial session with Wajeed of triple P. Just in case you're not familiar with Waj, he co-founded Slum Village, continues to push the Detroit sound and has a mixtape that's pure fire. Watch tutorial [Here] Listen to one of his mixtape tracks [Here]

Boutiques. Ubiq Update

Boutiques. Ubiq Update: If you haven't stopped by Ubiq yet, you're plain crazy. As time passes they continue to expand their product and ideas. They're currently one of the only spots in town carrying modern amusement, sneaker freaker, medium, and aNYthing [Website]
Hopefully some friends and family will stop by Ubiq to do a little shopping this Friday for their favorite Dork. I'm a size 9.5 and like bright colors. Oh, and don't forget to check out Part II of DM Issue 4 [Read]

Fly Tees. GBS' De La Doom Jam

Fly Tees. GBS' De La Doom Jam: These cats are pretty fresh. Their designs are unique. And, they've hit on something with their latest jam. They've taken two of Dork's favorite artists and created a well designed tee. The De La Soul x MF Doom shirt is pure heat rock.
GBS does work for all kinds of folks. They're not limited to tees. For instance you may have noticed their designs for High Snobiety*. Their refreshing originality in the field of graphic design is too ill. Be sure to check out their website and support these cats. [Here]

Dork Magazine. Issue 4 Part II

Dork Magazine. Issue 4 Part II: World! Part II of Dork Magazine Issue 4 is here. We have interviews with Lupe Fiasco, Juelz Santana, Little Brother and a column from our resident writer Heather Hoskeer. Be sure to check it out. [Read]
Brief Sidenote: Last weekend Marsha, James, Russ, Ali and I hit up Rice in Dumbo. The food was on point as always. Then we headed over to Triple Crown where we caught an impromptu performance from Sadat X and Greg Nice. They lit that jawn on fire. I haven't seen someone turn out a spot like that in a minute. Greg Nice is just that - NICE! Big up to the fam for a great weekend.

Animated Short. Tree + Me

Animated Short. Tree + Me: The dork folks have been following the work of VanBeater for a while. His art is pretty fresh. You may remember a post we did on him a few months ago. Well, he's at it again. This time, he and Brian McBrearty teamed up to create an animated short for your viewing pleasure.
The name of this jam is Tree + Me. It's a funky little tail. I consider it a remix version of Shel Siverstein's The Giving Tree. Check it out [Here]

Art. Arrive June13th Installation

Art. Arrive June13th Installation: The graphic application set forth by Dr. Romanelli and Jose Parla is some of the best. On December 3, Arrive and Complex present a special installation by this dynamic duo - in celebration of Art Basel Miami Beach. It looks like it's going to be a great event.
Be sure to stop by if you're in the area. The jam will be held at Arrive 100 16th Street, between Collins and Washington Avenues, from 7pm - 10pm. {Thanks Yevgeniy!} Check out the JuneThirteenth website for more info [Here]

Music. J-dilla and We're excited!

Music. J-Dilla and We're Excited: Today is a big day! So we thought we'd kick start it with some Jaydee news. Stones Throw recently added detail to their Dilla announcement. The upcoming release Donuts will be out in February 2006. Judging from the tracklisting, he's not skimping on the tracks - 31 bangers. Hopefully this album will make waves like Madvillainy. We'd love for Dilla to finally get his well deserved shine. Images for the album are posted below. Read more details [Here]
In other news, today marks Part Two of Dork Magazine Issue 4. It'll be posted some time in the PM, so stay tuned. Thanks and much respect to everyone who supported, emailed and showed love for part one. [Read]

Art. Yeti in Hong Kong

Art. Yeti in Hong Kong: The YETI exhibit has kicked off and the pics look fantastic. We mentioned it a few days back, but it's definitely worth mentioning again. The exhibit features some really cool stuff from folks like PHLASH, who is doing on-site mural painting, skateboard design, and other fresh stuff.
If you're in HK, be sure to make your way to the jam. If you're not in HK, you can peep pictures from the event (that runs till 12.8) at Just Another Reason. [View]

Also remember that all 4 Phlash's Scrawl Tees design will be available for purchase @ the venue.

Kicks. Sign the Petition

Kicks. Sign the Petition: As a younster, Back to the Future was my favorite flick. The hover board and kicks were something dreams were made of. Our Canadian homeboy, Al, has come up with a great idea. Wouldn't you like to see those Nike jams from the B2F movie actually make it to production!? Sign the petition and it just might happen.
I love Al's spirit, man. Speak truth to power and bring the power to the people homey. We need them kicks! Sign [Here]

Kehinde Wiley. Rumors of War

Kehinde Wiley. Rumors of War: I've never seen a marching band in SoHo. So you can imagine my elation after I walked up Grand St. and saw a real live marching band in front of the Deitch gallery. It took me back to when I was a youngster in my school's band. I was very cocky when I joined the band. I expected to lead the band's drumline to victory very easily. Well, I initially floundered in this new world, before I realized that it takes more than talent to reach the top. Wait a second! Sorry about that. That was actually the plot summary for Drumline. Wow, I need sleep.
The marching band was on Grand St. for the opening of Kehinde Wiley's exhibition: Rumors of War. Wiley is famous for juxtaposing images of power and spirituality. The exhibition features a short film by Jesse Williams. The film gives viewers an inside look into Kehinde Wiley's creative process. Rumors of War runs through December 10. If you are in NY, make sure you check it out. [Deitch]

Dork Magazine Issue #4 is Here!

Dork Magazine Issue #4 is Here: Get ready. We're packing heat! Right now Tip's Let's Ride is bumping in the background, there are more Starburst wrappers on the desk than I care to count and our eyes are completely red (note: screen eye is real). But, it's all worth it because our labor of love is here! The latest issue of DM contains some of our best conversational pieces to date. First up, we present Saul Williams, Woody from Sneaker Freaker, John Carluccio of Battlesounds fame, and an interview with the owners of Still Life Boutique in NYC. Check out the first installment of DM Issue #4 [Here]
In addition, Dork would like to extend a special thanks to our writers, photographers and supporters. Without you we would not be where we are today. I can't believe we started Dork just a year ago. It's been an amazing ride. Stay tuned for Parts II & III which will be ready to read on November 21 & 28 respectively. All the best and enjoy -- Dork staff.

Art. Neistat Classic PSP footage

Art. Neistat Classic PSP footage: The Neistat brothers are at it again. Many of you may remember their organic video about the defective ipod batteries. Their latest flick is just as classic. This time around, they've decided to take the supa-fresh designer covers for the PSP to the people to see what they really think about them.
The footage is well shot from an angle of honesty. Our homegirl Linlee hooked us up with this piece. We hope you enjoy it. Watch the video [Here]

Fresh Vibes. Mike23

Fresh Vibes. Mike23: The first time I saw these kicks, I was on pause. They're extra-fresh. Over the years my favorite aspect of the Jordan brand has been the signature concrete print. Well, Scott Nelson and his design crew are rocking this feature to the highest level. From hats, to tees, to kicks you can feel the subtle concrete love.
Mike's getting some great press in Mass Appeal, Complex, and Jux, but you can get the most info on this fresh line from their newly released site Mike23.com [Cold check it here]

Queue-Worthy. Bully

Queue-Worthy. Bully: Larry Clark has never been afraid to explore the harsh realities of youth in his art. Clark documents the youth culture American parents would rather not know about, notably in 1995's Kids, and long before that in seminal photographic books like Tulsa (1971) and Teenage Lust (1983).
Bully is a lot like Kids - except it's set in a Florida suburb, instead of the streets of New York. It is also based on a true story. The characters in Bully are pretty disgusting, yet you sympathize with them. They aren't one-dimensional, they're humans - people you know. When asked about why the sexuality of youth is a recurring theme in his work, Clark said:
"I’m sure it’s all filtered through my experiences and my age, and I don’t think there’s any way to get around that, but I try to understand what’s going on today. Kids are bombarded by information today whereas, when I was a kid, there was no information. The kind of innocence I knew is gone completely. From a very early age, these kids know and see everything, and it’s interesting to me to see how they process that. I think that the ideal thing would be for Kids who are the ages of the Kids in my films to be making these films. They would know better than me, but I’m trying to make films where they look at them and say, ‘Well, that’s not total bullshit, that’s pretty close to reality.’

Reason & Dork Bday

Reason: We are big fans of the Downtown NYC brand, Reason. They blend a gritty street ethos with the charm of high society. Thereby capturing the eclecticism that makes Downtown so friggin' ill. These photos give you a taste of what Philip and Jonathan have in the cooker for the winter. Visit Reason Clothing [Here]
Dork's first bday: One year ago today Taj put the first post on Dork. That post along with three initial articles has blossomed into what you see today. We would like to thank everyone who has helped so far. The list is way too long and I don't want to leave anyone out, but you guys know who you are. We've been real busy putting the final touches on our latest issue. It will be our best work to date. Here's to another productive and prosperous year at Dork Magazine. Cheers!

J*Davey. Dork of the Week

J*Davey | Dork of the Week: This week we've got two funksters as our Dork of the week - the uncomparable music group - J*Davey. From day one we were captivated. Their sound sets a new standard for musicians who stand outside of the mainstream. Just when you thought the industry established clear boundaries and categories for artists, J*Davey comes out of nowhere to crusade an ever expanding movement of defiance.
Briana Cartwright and Brook D'Leau combine forces to form J*Davey. Taking advantage of every opportunity to express, the duo presents something more than a sonic journey. There is something deeper. One listen and it becomes apparent that they possess a sincere commitment to art. These two cats are creative, plain and simple. And, that's what's so exciting. They aren't bashful about taking chances. Ultimately, they have the potential to alter our everyday expectations of music. So, without further ado we present J*Davey, our Dork of the Week. Check out their pics and responses to the usual DotW questions...

Events. Rude Movements

Events. Rude Movements: Tonight the folks behind Rude hit you with another fiesta at APT. Their monthly jam is always a great time. The deejays are classic. The crowds are enthused. But, my favorite part of the Rude Movement has got to be the site. The photos and layout are fantastic - mad simple and packed with substance.
Anyway, if you're in the New York area, check them out. DJ Recloose will be spinning. After leaving Detroit for New Zealand several years ago, he's returned to the States for this exclusive NYC engagement in support of his sophomore record “Hiatus On The Horizon” for Peacefrog Records. Featured artists include Jeff Miller, Ilkka Supanen, Richard Hutten and others. Be sure to check it out. There appears to be several segments of coverage, so stay tuned to their site. Perhaps Dork will be in the house next year for our own exclusive. [MocoLoco Tokyo]

Gadgets. Sony Cybershot DSC-T9

Gadgets. Sony Cybershot DSC-T9: People love cameras. As they get smaller and smaller, their functionality grows exponentially. Personally, I love a small digital camera - especially if it has high resolution. You can't lose. Small jammies afford you the ability to take high quality pics all the time. It's nothing to carry a small camera in your pocket. I used to carry one everywhere (before it died).
If snapping spontaneous photos is your thing, you'll love the new Sony Cybershot DSC-T9. Its their latest design from the slim line. It packs a 6 mega-pixel resolution, Carl Zeiss lens, 6x zoom and a cool steady shot function to prevent blurry photos. It's definitely Dork recommended. Although it's available for purchase, they won't be shipping until January 20. [More Details]

Great Ideas. Whiskerino 2005

Great Ideas. Whiskerino 2005: This is one of the greatest ideas on the web. I don't have much facial hair, but what I do have I pride myself on. Well... for those other facial hair fans, let us unite! Check out this beard collaborative/competition. Some of the worlds greatest in facial hair have combined forces to take on the status quo. Whiskerino 2005 is alive!
If you've got what it takes to grow a manly beard, view the rules and post them pics up! The entry date may have passed, but you can at least be a spectator until the next one. Big ups to Michael Eades, Daniel Box and Jamie Holland for designing the site. It's pure bananas. [Whiskerino 2005]

Art. Slow Moving Vehicle

Art. Slow Moving Vehicle: Brandon Francis' art is extra fresh. His product line, Slow Moving Vehicle, possesses a thoughtful under-current that resonates with the viewer. The colors, lines and textures all contribute to this heavy effect. I found myself really getting into these designs. It's art that you would love to have on your wall and just stare at all day.
It's important to note that Brandon's work transcends canvases. Slow Moving Vehicle is on tees, bags and wallets. He has a new line coming out for the fall and you can find it all at [Digital Gravel] Be sure to check out some of his work below:

Weekend Re.up & Bilal

Weekend Re.up & Bilal: Bilal's vocal range is pretty ridiculous. Homeboy can sing deep tones and hit Prince octaves in a blink. We always thought Sometimes' arrangement and transitions solidified his position as an artist with longevity. But, as if that wasn't enough, his latest singles prove he's not going anywhere. It's good to hear his music again. We're looking forward to the new album. Listen [Something to Hold on to & High and Dry]

Artist. Will Sweeney

Artist. Will Sweeney: The art world is seriously putting it down. As we look back at our week's post, the lion's share of them have demonstrated artists doing some pretty fresh art things. Sometimes it's hard to find people doing new stuff, but for some reason this week has been our lucky week. The news-wires from the art world are buzzing. ha!
The pic above is from one of our favorite photo/graph style artist, Will Sweeney. He's been combining funky graphics with eye catching photos to create images like the one above. You can view his work at the BigActive website which is a collective of artists who've made some impressive contributions to the visual world. [Website]

Music. Damian Marley & Nas

Music. Damian Marley & Nas: Jamrock is still getting heavy rotation on our music players. That song is so triumphant. Especially when you consider how his brief performance on Alicia's Unplugged made the entire album worth copping. There's something about her intro and his out of the blue appearance that set the stage on fire. Damian is the man.
In the spirit of keeping the West Indian invasion alive, we have another track for you. Be sure to check out his latest single Road to Zion featuring Nas. [Listen]

Music. Understanding the Roots Vol. I & II

Music. Understanding the Roots Vol. I & II: I'm a fan of Philadelphia. I'm a fan of the Sixers. I'm a fan of the Eagles. And, most notably, I'm a fan of the Roots. Although there doesn't seem to be much excitement brewing around this double release, I'm sure people will be pleasantly surprised by the bonus material. Besides the cover art is some of the cleanest design I've seen.
Volumes I and II will be in stores November 15. They'll include rare and unreleased tracks, remixes and other funky material. I once heard that the group records something like 400 songs for an album. I don't know if this is the norm for most groups, but I want to hear what didn't make it. At least OSN* hips us every once in a while. Below, you'll find posted pics of the album covers and some audio from the releases.

Design. Non-Format

Design. Non-Format: Non-Format, Creative Direction and Design, is a London based firm who have worked on a range of client projects. These projects include music packaging, illustrations for fashion, advertising, art for music magazines (The Wire) and other freshness. Their work has a timeless nature that delivers messages with punch and precision.
If you're looking for a design firm or some inspiration for design, definitely check these cats out. The above picture had me stuck for a while. I love the color scheme and layout. Although it's just a snippet, the entire picture sets a high standard for graphic art and design. [View]

Audio. Maspyke's No Big Deal

Audio. Maspyke's No Big Deal: Dork has been following Maspyke since our time in DC (circa 2001). Their lyrics are refreshing, clear and rooted in relevance. When I was in college (pre-2001) a group of us went to a weekly jawn called Soul Camp in DC. The cats there played classic underground hip hop (before it was a cliché to say any hip hop was underground.) We'd come out at the end of the night totally gassed off of the new music we heard from folks who were clearly passionate about their craft. Well, every time I hear a Maspyke joint, it takes me right back to that feeling.
Check out this track from their latest album entitled Static. Then show the group some love and head over to your local record shop and buy the album. Oh and the holiday season is coming up, so it wouldn't hurt to buy a copy for a friend. Cold check it [Download No Big Deal]

Gadgets. Sony's Bean

Gadgets. Sony's Bean: This is one funky looking gadget. The Sony Bean is a semi-decent competitor to the Shuffle. For the sake of balance, we felt it would only be fair to give the Bean some shine, since we usually obsess about Apple products.
The Bean is a 512 MB mp3 player with a built in FM tuner, built in USB connector and 1 line electroluminescence display. Pretty cool, considering it only cost $119 bukaroos. Another really cool function is that it has a Super Quick Battery charge (3 minute charge = 3 hours of playback), with the ability to charge up to 50 hours of playback life in total. If you're in the market for an entry level mp3 player, this is a nice alternative to the Apple Shuffle.

Interviews. Floetry (Video)

Interviews. Floetry (Video): Floetry is boss. We've discussed their upcoming album a few times here at Dork. We wouldn't mention it so much if it wasn't good. Be sure to pick it up on November 8th when it hits store shelves. Until then, check out this video interview featuring the duo. [Here]
In other news, this week has been flying. Here we are facing Thursday - one day away from the weekend happs. Tomorrow night, CUT presents Dirty Down featuring deejays Catchdubs, Blu Jemz & Mike Simonetti. It should be a nice affair. Check it out at LIT [93 2nd Ave, NYC].

Artist. Genevieve Gauckler

Artist. Genevieve Gauckler: Genevieve Gauckler's work is prolific. From installations to bags, Genevieve has made his mark. You may have seen his work in Colette. Or more recently, you may have seen his stuff in Hotel Fox. This guy is sick.
For example, in April of 2005, 20 designers were asked to redesign 3 rooms in the Hotel Fox, located in Copenhaguen, Denmark. The designers began spraying their artistic craft all over the rooms. They designed everything from the walls to the bed sheets to the curtains. The rooms are pretty fresh, and you can even stay there. Below, we've posted pics of the rooms done by Genevieve. Check them out and be sure to visit his site [Here]

Gadgets. RIM Launches New Blackberry

Gadgets. RIM Launches New Blackberry: Oh no - not again! Just when we had had it with RIM and their pesky Blackberries, they release a new version that's slowly sucking us back in. The new 8700c, loaded with an Intel chip and priced at $299, promises quick data transfer, internet connectivity, 64MB flash memory, and bluetooth. I must admit, this version looks mighty cool.
At the press launch yesterday RIM mentioned that it won't be available until November 21. Some complained that this seemed a little distant. Why not have a press launch when the product is available for purchase? Oh well. Hopefully all of the functionality issues we've seen in the past are semi resolved this time around.

Art. Joshua Mays

Art. Joshua Mays: This cat is talented. His expressive visions have illustrated covers and prints far and wide. Most recently, you've probably seen his work on the cover of Jneiro Jarel's Three Piece Puzzle. The colors, lines and inherent motion give his work a warmth that is unique and interesting.
Joshua developed an online gallery that displays some of his work. You can purchase these pieces online. Below, we've posted a few pics to give you a taste of the goodness he's bringing.

There is something about the humming, frantic rhyme scheme and godzilla drums that make this song a classic. We're running today. So, coming live (not really) from our matchbox office to your cpu of choice is a song we've had on repeat for the last 30 minutes. [Download Run]
