Film. Get Up Stand Up

Film. Get Up Stand Up: There's a lot of talk about the impact music (specifically hip-hop music) is having on society. It's an interesting debate and we're glad - dialogue is important. But we also wonder if this debate will lead to some action, and not simply excising a few dirty words from rap songs. We're talking about an improvement in the quality of life for all people, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or national origin. Yeah, we know, that probably won't happen.
We all know music has never been about one thing. If you ask Mos Def, we are music (he really said we are hip-hop, but you know what I mean) so the music is going to be about what we are about. Get Up, Stand Up is a two-hour documentary, hosted by Chuck D. The film chronicles the role pop music has played in the ongoing struggles for peace and equality. It's an inspiring film, especially now. Check your local PBS listings to find out when it airs.
