People. The Return of El-Producto

People. The Return of El-Producto: EL-P is not your standard, garden variety, underground hip-hop artist. As part of the mid ‘90s indie hip-hop vanguard, a frontman for the influential Company Flow and a former face of the beloved Rawkus label, he is one of the artists who has consistently kept hip-hop’s forward motion secure while flying just beneath the radar. In the early part of the new millennium he brought us the Definitive Jux label and his brilliant solo project debut, Fantastic Damage, an album that was hailed by critics for its originality and politically charged, post-apocalyptic future sound.
Last month, El-P made his long anticipated return with I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, another critically acclaimed effort that has been a breath of fresh air sonically. Filled with complex, challenging, layered, hard-hitting beats that resurrect memories of Public Enemy’s Bomb Squad and again using post 9/11 New York and American foreign policy as its subject matter, the album is poignant in its artistic message and reminiscent of a bygone era in its muckraking spirit. While both the weighty subject and sound of the record is not for everyone, the album is definitely worth a listen. Watch El-P discuss his new record, last month, at LA’s famed Troubador with Kotori Magazine and a bonus vid after the jump.
