Audio. Lupe Unplugged

Audio. Lupe Unplugged: It’s cool when a couple of elements of a song are changed and the result is something completely fresh. Lupe Fiasco’s Superstar gets new life with this live version he recorded with Matthew Santos for BBC. It reminds us of Nelly Furtado’s cover of Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy.
The acoustic version is a bit more subdued than the original. Lupe employs a soft-spoken delivery and it kind of makes you listen to the words differently. He even does back up vocals for Matthew. Pretty impressive stuff. Watch the acoustic version of Superstar after the jump.

Audio. Land of the Lost EP

Audio. Land of the Lost EP: J*Davey has been one the most buzzed about emerging groups in recent memory. Songs like No More and Mr. Mister, whet the appetites of listeners in search of something new. The self-described "post hip-hop electronic new wave funk punk jazz band" signed with Warner Bros. in March and they seemed to be well on their way to bringing their new sound to the masses.
Alas, reports surfaced in June that the group's major-label debut, 4000 A.D. had been shelved indefinitely. Could industry rule number 4080 be ruining another promising career? Who knows? Well, what's up with J*Davey now? They have put together a mix in association with DJ Lindsey and the Fader, it includes some of the stuff they've been working on as of late. For the uninitiated as well as the die-hards, the Land of The Last EP will not disappoint. Unlike most free mixes released over the web, this is the one you'd pay good money for.

People. Is Lupe dumbing down his music?

People. Is Lupe dumbing down his music?: According to popular opinion, hip-hop is a dish best served dumb. Swagger is everything. This puts thoughtful, intelligent artists in a most precarious situation. Do you compromise your music in order to sell records, or do you stay true to yourself and starve?
Jay-Z said it best on Moment Of Clarity, his take on his own music: "I dumbed down for my audience to double my dollars." As cynical as it sounds, it's smart to be stupid, if it makes you rich. So is Lupe taking Jay's advice? It's too early to tell, but his latest single Dumb it Down, gives you insight into this common dilemma.

Audio. Stones Throw Podcast #21

Audio. Stones Throw Podcast: A friend once said it's all about baby steps. They weren't lying. Slow progression is a good thing, but balancing that against ambition is tricky. So when we were discussing music labels and who's been consistent over the years, only a few came to mind. One of them being Stones Throw Records. They've effectively built a brand with thoughtful slow progression. Their careful navigation places them beyond assimilation and compromise.
One of our favorite contributions from Stones Throw is their podcast. Most recently they released Madlib Remixes 1997 - 2007 mixed by JRocc. As they describe it: "In time for Madlib's upcoming Jaylib Remixes disc on the new Champion Sound CD, JRocc goes through the Invazion archives for 10 years of remixes. Some of these are unreleased, some are rarely heard, others are just plain dope."

Audio. Hello Young World: Vol. II

Audio. Hello Young World V.II: Mixtapes are like pizza, when they're good - they're good and when they're bad - they're still good. There's just something awesome about someone compiling a bunch of songs for others to hear. Who doesn't like that?
The UK producer, Lushlife, best known for the Kanye West x Beach Boys mashup in 2005, is back with second volume of Hello Young World. The mix is an outgrowth of the 2002 NYC rooftop party series of the same name, where 500 limited edition discs were pressed and circulated. This second installment in the series, features music by Bloc Party, The Shout Out Louds, his own band Ordinaire and classics from the Pixies, Pulp and New Order. Best of all, the entire 20 plus track disc is being made available completely free as an internet download. Enjoy.

Audio. Timbo the King!

Audio. Timbo the King: We love this guy. Timbo's fun approach to music bridges pop culture gaps. With his new song Laugh at Them, he's done it again. He's brought a new sound that just feels good.
Timbo's remix brings together Justin, Jay-Z and the man himself. The track has a nice bounce. Nothing too over the top that you can't hear the lyrics. They compliment each other nicely. The instrumental is like a smooth escalator for folks to ride on. We've been listening to this song on repeat for the last, um, 3 hours. It has endless replay value.

Audio. Adult Swim's Definitive Swim

Audio. Adult Swim's Definitive Swim: Adult Swim is the closest thing to a lifestyle programming block on television. It’s a subtle realization by Dork. There are of course full-on channels directed to cultures and lifestyles, but there is not a comparable alternative adult-themed entertainment block like Adult Swim. From their association with Stones Throw to their programming, there is a definite method to their irreverent, hip-hop friendly, Boston up-roar creating marketing schemes. Chrome Children is their most notable foray into beats and rhymes, inevitably followed by Chrome Children 2, both released in conjunction with Stones Throw.
Now having established the clear association with the Left Coasts’ marquee, art-house hip-hop label, the minds at Adult Swim have decided to team up with Definitive Jux to bring a little East Coast indie hip-hop label flavor and perhaps, a little balance. The album - Definitive Swim - is a ten track compilation of Def Jux artists featuring everyone from the established underground giants EL-P, Aesop Rock and Mr. Lif, to the label's rising stars Cool Calm Pete and Cage. What’s more, the album is free! Free and downloadable! Ahh… yes, another reason to love Adult Swim.

Audio. Little Brother's New MixTape

Audio. Little Brother's New MixTape: Free downloadable mixtapes are the marketing strategy de jour. From Madlib and Kweli's Liberation to Little Brother and Mick Boogie's collabo entitled And Justus for All - it's good seeing innovation making moves around the RIAA. At least the artists are embracing the interwebs and broadband connections.
One of our favorite jams from Little Bro's new mixtape is A Word from our Sponsor. It's a door knocker featuring Von Pea. Von has long been an office favorite. I'm sure you've read our positive words about him. And, as usual he rips this track. His flow and approach embodies everything we love about hip hop. How has this cat not blown up yet? Ah well, I guess that's due course, but seriously more folks gotta catch up.

Audio. Wu-Tang & Friends

Audio. Wu-Tang & Friends: So I saw the Grammys last night. As I watched The Police perform for the second or third time since breaking up in 1984, it occurred to me. Someday, maybe 15 years from now, Wu-Tang will be doing the same perfomance. That is going to be one interesting show.
Wu-Tang Clan's DJ Mathematics has compiled rare recordings, remixes, unreleased tracks, and outtakes from the cutting room floor that didn’t make previous Wu-Tang albums. The compilation works as an audio archive, filling in gaps and providing new context to old favorites like Ghost's Maxine. Who knows, maybe they'll perform one of these songs at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards. Either way, the album is worth checking out.

Artist. The Rapture

Artist. The Rapture: For as long as I can remember, I've been creating the ultimate playlist. What makes a playlist excellent? Some say, "it's about taste, not obscurity.*" That's debatable, but we can all agree that any good playlist needs an intro song -- a song that jazzes you up and gets you ready for hours of audible goodness. Something with, COWBELL!
The Rapture are back, and they're ready to partay. Their jam, Woo Alright, Yeah U-Huh, has been the leadoff song on the office playlist for like, a week. The lyrics are hilarious, the drumming is wicked, and we already mentioned the cowbell. Enjoy.

Artist. Malajube

Artist. Malajube: One of these days, I'm going to learn French. I've been saying that for years, but this time I mean it. For me, it would be like having magical powers. I'd never have to wonder what French people were saying about me. This skill is especially handy when dining at a French bistro.
Canadian indie-poppers, Malajube's Pâte Filo has been getting massive spins in the Dork office. The song and video are reminiscent of A-Ha's Take on Me and that is a good thing. If you're in NYC, be sure to see them perform at the Mercury Lounge, February 18.

Audio. Nire

Audio. Nire: Easily the slickest chick in the game. When it comes to beat making she is one of hip-hop's freshest young talents. We came across some of her music while watching MOB Living episode one on Riottt.com. Her refreshing sounds were acting as the soundtrack. As we watched we were taken over by the music. You know the feeling - “I need to hear more of this right now!”
Luckily, at the end of episode one there was a URL to her Myspace page. There we found full tracks that we also liked. A standing favorite was the track titled “Sweet Toof.” The sound is innocent, playful, and flavorful. Not to take anything away from the other tracks, but this stood out to us. She is on point and we can't wait to hear more from her. Respect Nire.

Audio. Talib Kweli & Madlib's Liberation: Sound the horns. It's another invasion. Talib and Mad have joined forces to release a sonic boom on the hip hop masses. Our friend Ray was right, let's start 2007 off with a bang.
Brought to you by the good folks from BlackSmith and Madlib - the entire EP is free. Talk about embracing technology! The cover art and music is all available for download. Don't miss this opportunity. The bandwith usage for these guys must be insane. Thank you Kweli and Madlib for giving us a bit of inspiration for the New Year.

Audio. Still Dreamin'

Audio. Still Dreamin: I've been listening to Still Dreamin' on repeat for about a week now and I've decided that it's the greatest song that I've ever heard. Hyperbolic, I know, but the song is moving and that's pretty rare. Still Dreamin' is a concise, poignant portrait of what modern life is about - fantasy.
Kanye's verse is a tale of the bourgeois male's ultimate fantasy/nightmare. In the end, he has nothing and is haunted by nightmares of what he has lost. Nas' story is about two deluded friends, stuck in a permanent adolescence. Classic.

Audio. New Music from Mos Def

Audio. New Music from Mos Def: It's the mighty Mos Def. Man do we miss this cat. Although we appreciate the fact that his movie career has taken off - hip hop could use his input. Nas' album was great. Jigga man set forth a strong effort. Tribe toured again, but it would be nice to see Dante Beze get back on the scene. Why not!?
In Fake Bonanza Mos pits his social commentary over a mellow beat. We're not sure if it's that we miss him, or that his rhymes are that compelling, but either way, we can't stop listening. It's like catching up with a good friend. Lately, we've been taking the stance that songs don't necessarily have to be perfect. Life's too short. Better yet, music should just express something that seems sincere and is excitable. Let's start there for 2007.

Dork Audio. Hip Hop is Dead by Nas

Dork Audio. Hip Hop is Dead by Nas: The above pic screams hope for hip hop. We're not sure why, but there's something about folks being sincerely excited that brings life to a fledgling art form. Nas' latest track may claim that hip hop is dead but if you listen closely you'll find the opposite.
The beats change, the flow takes on different rhythms and his words bounce like the Nas we know and love. Although it has undertones of a previous track he did (Thief's Theme), it doesn't matter. That song was a banger too. We think you'll enjoy this. Once again the months of October to December rain musical treats.

Music. Nina Simone Remixed & Obliqsound Remixes 2

Music. Nina Simone Remixed & ObliqSound Remixes 2: Remixing soulful or jazzy tunes is tough. Many try and fail, but every once in a while you find some gems. Madlib's remix of the BlueNote collection is one of our favorites. And, if you're looking for uptempo beats and energetic sounds, we have two recommendations for you.
First is a remix album for Nina Simone entitled, Remixed and Reimagined. We love the sounds of Nina, so we were a little skeptical about this effort. But, this is a respectable tribute to an artist that is almost impossible to reimagine. Producers Coldcut, Francois K, Tony Humphries and DJ Logic do a fantastic job with the RCA catalog of tunes. Second is Obliqsound Remixes Volume 2. On this album there are uptempo beats that help us step out of the 91-92 bpms usually found on a Tribe Called Quest record. You probably wouldn't find us listening to this everyday, but it's a refreshing change to the music we're usually bumping. Overall the album is beautifully put together. As ObliqSound co-founder, Tobias Tanner states, "As a brand, our philosophy is focused on creating a sensual experience - both audibly and visually - for our fans." Well done, they have accomplished that with ObliqSounds Remixed Volume 2.

Audio. DJ Junior Lend Me Your Ear

Audio. DJ Junior Lend Me Your Ear: DJ Junior is a great friend. He's also a phenomenal dj. We interviewed him for Dork, and he's also written a few articles for us. Due to his own humility, many don't realize how committed Junior is to music. His contributions are inmeasurable.
Once again, Junior has something for music fans. His debut release, Lend Me Your Ear is a mix of music you might miss, need to be introduced to, or wish you were hearing within the context of today's musical landscape. As ?uestlove from the Roots says, "When it comes to 'tastemakers,' that small but significant community of people who tell the world who to look out for, who affect the musical landscape, Junior is right up there in my top 3. Junior (Philly), Gilles Peterson (London) and Garth Trinidad (Los Angeles) share that stage for me. His forte…eyeing new music from both emerging and established artists and formatting it, in a way you ain’t heard. Junior introduces it to us long before it becomes a bleep on the larger screen…and later, that force to contend with." Enough said.

Audio. A Song For The Fields

Audio. A Song For The Fields: The Island has been on cable a lot lately. I never thought about watching it but I had to because Mr. T's I Pity the Fool was the only other thing on and I couldn't sleep. It's not breaking any new ground but it's good.
That doesn't have anything to do with Fields. They're a pack of Londoners that make music that is both trippy and subversive. Song For The Fields is their lead single. Don't listen to this song on your way to work, you'll turn around.

Audio. Crooklyn Wins Again

Audio. Crooklyn Wins Again: It's all about instrumental suspense. Dork took a quick office poll and determined that the intros to Crooklyn 1, 2 & 3 have been full of anticipation and excitement. All of them caught us in the rapture. From the first sound we knew it was on - whether it was a horn, or Guru's signature voice saying, "Never taking shorts because Brooklyn's the borough!"
Crooklyn wins again with this third installment. The song features Mos Def, Jean Grae & Memphis Bleek. I know, many of you are wondering about Memphis, but he holds his own. We always thought Memphis was a sufficient lyricist, it was his substance that brought him down. No one believed a word he said. It just wasn't credible. However, on this track for some reason his flow and energy works. It sounds nice with the likes of Mos and Jean. Definitely check it out.

Audio. Akai MPC 500

Audio. Akai MPC 500: Making beats is a Dork pastime. Even though the pace of keeping up a magazine has slowed down our bass thumping production - we still love beats. Recently we purchased an MPC 1000 after rocking the 2000xl for a while. Both machines are great, but the 1000 provides a little more mobility. We fell in love with its size and intuitive functionality. Perhaps one day we'll be making jams like Shawn J. Period [Listen]
Well, it doesn't stop there. Akai keeps putting it on them. In the near future they will be releasing a MPC 500. Engadget spotted the gem. Here's what they had to say: "Sometimes, vapourware turns out to be real. There have been rumors, complete with stupid photoshop images, that a portable, pocket-sized sampler/drum machine called the MPC-500 was about to be launched by Akai for at least two years. Last week, after a few leaked photos appeared, it was finally announced: a little black box running on 6 AA batteries, with 12 pads, 16mb of memory and a two-line LCD display beamed straight out of a 1985 pocket calculator. Is it the greatest piece of pocketable audio kit since the Walkman iPod, or just an overpriced toy for DJ wannabes? Keep reading for the full scoop..."

Audio. Return of Ironman

Audio. Return of Ironman: I have to be honest. I don't like it when the masses like the artists I like. It makes me feel unoriginal and lame. I know it's wack for me to feel like this but I like to believe I have somewhat unique taste.
When did Ghostface become everyone's favorite rapper? Maybe it's all the love he has gotten from august publications like The New Yorker. I don't know. It just seems like people like to drop Ghost's name so they can seem "edgy" or into "real" New York hip hop. Whatever. It makes me sick and those MTV2 spots, The World According to Pretty Toney, seemed a little condescending*. But maybe I just think too much. Well, Ghost has a new joint, The Return of Ironman and it's pretty nifty.

Dork Audio. Soul Sista (Madlib Remix)

Dork Audio. Soul Sista (Madlib Remix): Hypnotic baselines are nothing new for Madlib. A few years back he teamed up with Bilal to remix the soulful head-knock known as Soul Sista. Although the track was released on vinyl only, we were able to find a digital version. This track gets heavy rotation in the office. Bilal is performing tonight at R&R [416 W 14th Street, NYC]
In collabo related news - per Stones Throw's site - "Following up on the successful release of DANGERDOOM: The Mouse and the Mask in October 2005, Adult Swim will collaborate on a second hip hop album, this time with indie label Stones Throw Records. The album, slated to debut October 3rd, will celebrate Stones Throw’s ten-year anniversary and feature all of the artists on the label. Stones Throw’s roster includes artists Madlib, MF DOOM, the late J. Dilla and others who are considered some of the most creative artists in hip hop today." Don't sleep on this one. We watched the video teaser of their tour and it's an insane line-up. [Check it out]

Albums. More info on The Shining!

Albums. More info on The Shining: We're looking forward to the release of Dilla's The Shining. We've been talking about it for some time now, and the anticipation continues to grow. I can't think of a day that has gone by without at least one of his songs bumping through the offices. It's going to be great hearing the new material.
For those who may have missed our previous posts on the topic. J Dilla leaves behind a body of work which will be loved and rediscovered for years to come. His most recent album "Donuts" was released on February 7th, the day of his 32nd birthday. Two other projects, "The Shining" (BBE Records) and "Jay Love Japan" (Operation Unknown) are completed and will be released this year. Other production work has been completed for artists Madlib, Busta Rhymes, Ghostface Killah, A.G., Visionaries, Truth Hurts, Phat Kat, MF DOOM, Skillz, and Frank N Dank. Dilla’s music will live on; in the meantime, we invite you to have a listen to “The Shining” and help spread Dilla’s message of Love.

Audio. Nelly Furtado

Audio. Nelly Furtado: Nelly's third album Loose debuted last week at the top of the charts. She's going for wreck and performing anywhere and everywhere. Whether she's on the Today show, Leno or Letterman you can catch her and Timbo (aka Thomas Crown) performing Promiscuous. We were really feeling the song when we first heard it, but it's not quite the same live. To be fair though, it must be really hard to replicate the energy of Tim's drums with a live band. Is that possible?
Either way, Promiscuous is going to be burning up the radio for the next few months. So, as an alternative, we found this really ill cover performance of Nelly singing Gnarls Barkley's Crazy from a BBC show a few weeks back. From one pop song to another, the exchange is refreshing and interesting at the same time. Illustration Credit The Angel Frog*

Audio. Nas Looking Back.

Audio. Nas Looking Back: The other day I was in line at a store and overheard the following conversation between a 14 year old boy and his younger sister: "Sis! Look at what I just got from FYE. It's Nas' first album." The girl replies, "So!" He responds, "So! Are you crazy!? This is one of the best albums of all time." She responds with nonapproval, "How could it be? It only has 10 songs." He immediately puts the cd back in his bag and says, "You don't know anything!"
I love that conversation. It gives us hope that a few younger folks are still reaching into the heyday of hip-hop beyond what the mainstream is feeding them. Was this an outlier? Possibly. We realize that all things change, but it's nice to know that the spectrum of an art-form isn't being forgotten. So from then to now, check out Nas' latest single, Where Y'all At. Although the track is mild in excitement, it still gets the job done. Photo Credit Bakinakwa*

On his recent mixtape, Syndromes 2, he does more infecting. He takes old licks and matches them with familiar lyrics, well placed cuts and smooth blends. Audio. Skateboard Pass

Audio. Skateboard Pass: It's just plain revealing. That's the best art. The Dork offices go absolutely bizerk when they hear revealing lyrics over a well sampled instrumental. Lupe's Kick Push was insane on its own. Now they've given it new life with Pharrell's added verse.
If this song was on a cassette it would have popped a long time ago. However, thanks to mp3 technology, dork headquarters can be filled with this jam over and over and over again. Skateboard P's verse is what we'd like to see more of in the music realm - simple, humble tales set to the pace of life's lessons. Skateboard P stands for all the stuff he used to skateboard pass. Get it right!

Audio. Don't Feel Right

Audio. Don't Feel Right: The Roots have a vision. They have a vision at the constant risk of alienating fans, critics, and the peanut gallery. But in the end, when folks look back at their complete discography, there's a good chance their work will be celebrated and appreciated more then when they were actually making it. We really admire their vision, their commitment to it and trust them. After hearing Don't Feel Right, I think the trust is paying off. That song is so super-fantastic.
Black Thought's rhymes present strong social commentary. The drums are ominous. The sample is cut in a way that makes you think they're creating a Séance for Dilla. Then, THEN, there is the mid beat change-up. Dork highly recommends this song. (Please note: the pic was sent to us by the mighty photo journalist, MPOZI).

Audio. Busta and that NY Stuff!

Audio. Busta and that NY Stuff: DJ Scratch, you did it on this one. Samples! We love a heavy sample and some filtered drums. It's great hearing Busta go for his on this track. The first time I heard the song, I was on the way back to Philly from Brooklyn and there was something so refreshing about it. It's definitely a spring/summer anthem.
Hopefully this is just a taste of what's to come. Busta's shout-outs took us down memory lane and readjusted our expectations again. Will the music ever be the same? I don't know. It doesn't have to be, it just has to be inspiring, exciting and unpredictable. (Big shout to Ian* and Spine*)

People. Sarah Hepburn

People. Sarah Hepburn: Sarah Hepburn is on a mission to share her music. If you made music like her, you'd be on a mission too. Her voice is the kind you want to hear after a long night. One of those perfect nights where you run into an old friend, go out, meet completely random people and have the kind of fun people only seem to have in indie films. Sarah has a cool perspective on her art:
I started forming melodies since before I can remember... I have always loved the unusual sides of music, so growing up I would often search for that one station on the radio that had the strangest music I'd ever heard, not being able to explain it. But it grabbed my heart just as much as experiencing The Mamas and The Papas at a folk-festival or hearing my dad play banjo in the living room, and has deeply influenced my musical walk... Whether playing for my family at family events or in front of strangers I have always enjoyed sharing music with others.
Sarah Hepburn's solo album, Stars And Haze, is out now on Copenhagen Records.

BeatMaking. Wajeed & Red Bull Music

BeatMaking. Wajeed & Red Bull Music Academy: The Red Bull Music Academy is one of the best executions of a great idea I've seen in recent memory. RBMA is an event that travels the world bringing together folks who are creating music with professionals in the field. They've had people like Madlib, Egon, A-trak, Amp Fiddler and others. It's a great musical opportunity if you have the chance to apply and attend.
Most recently they posted a tutorial session with Wajeed of triple P. Just in case you're not familiar with Waj, he co-founded Slum Village, continues to push the Detroit sound and has a mixtape that's pure fire. Watch tutorial [Here] Listen to one of his mixtape tracks [Here]

Music. J-Dilla and We're Excited: Today is a big day! So we thought we'd kick start it with some Jaydee news. Stones Throw recently added detail to their Dilla announcement. The upcoming release Donuts will be out in February 2006. Judging from the tracklisting, he's not skimping on the tracks - 31 bangers. Hopefully this album will make waves like Madvillainy. Music. Damian Marley & Nas

Music. Damian Marley & Nas: Jamrock is still getting heavy rotation on our music players. That song is so triumphant. Especially when you consider how his brief performance on Alicia's Unplugged made the entire album worth copping. There's something about her intro and his out of the blue appearance that set the stage on fire. Damian is the man.
In the spirit of keeping the West Indian invasion alive, we have another track for you. Be sure to check out his latest single Road to Zion featuring Nas. [Listen]

Music. Understanding the Roots Vol. I & II

Music. Understanding the Roots Vol. I & II: I'm a fan of Philadelphia. I'm a fan of the Sixers. I'm a fan of the Eagles. And, most notably, I'm a fan of the Roots. Although there doesn't seem to be much excitement brewing around this double release, I'm sure people will be pleasantly surprised by the bonus material. Besides the cover art is some of the cleanest design I've seen.
Volumes I and II will be in stores November 15. They'll include rare and unreleased tracks, remixes and other funky material. I once heard that the group records something like 400 songs for an album. I don't know if this is the norm for most groups, but I want to hear what didn't make it. At least OSN* hips us every once in a while. Below, you'll find posted pics of the album covers and some audio from the releases.

Audio. Maspyke's No Big Deal

Audio. Maspyke's No Big Deal: Dork has been following Maspyke since our time in DC (circa 2001). Their lyrics are refreshing, clear and rooted in relevance. When I was in college (pre-2001) a group of us went to a weekly jawn called Soul Camp in DC. The cats there played classic underground hip hop (before it was a cliché to say any hip hop was underground.) We'd come out at the end of the night totally gassed off of the new music we heard from folks who were clearly passionate about their craft. Well, every time I hear a Maspyke joint, it takes me right back to that feeling.
Check out this track from their latest album entitled Static. Then show the group some love and head over to your local record shop and buy the album. Oh and the holiday season is coming up, so it wouldn't hurt to buy a copy for a friend. Cold check it [Download No Big Deal]

Audio. Ghost Megatron's Run Remix

Audio. Ghost Megatron's Run Remix: What more can I say that hasn't already been said about Ghost? The man is invincible on the mic. His charisma and energy can bring life to the dullest of occasions. That is precisely why Dork decided to use this Pistol Pete Remix of Run as our morning anthem.
There is something about the humming, frantic rhyme scheme and godzilla drums that make this song a classic. We're running today. So, coming live (not really) from our matchbox office to your cpu of choice is a song we've had on repeat for the last 30 minutes. [Download Run]

Music. Ali | On My Greezy

Music. Ali | On My Greezy: If you are reading this, you are probably at work. They aren't enough songs about working. You know, the plain old 9-5. This seems a little odd because that is what most people do with their lives - work. Okay, there is that Vanessa Williams oldie, Work to Do. Remember those lyrics:
Ooh, I got work to do, I got work baby
I got work to do, I got a job yeah
I got work to do, said I got work to do
Well, Ali-Bey aka A. Greezy aka Greezy Monster, has a little diddy about the virtues of working hard. On my Greezy, is an abstract joint with an interesting blues feel. This tune will definitely take you out of your cubicle. [Listen]

Art. Shawn J. Period & Threadless

Art. Shawn J. Period & Threadless: Just when you thought it was finished, they reappear. Shawn J. Period is making a comeback. Last I heard, he had a family and left the beatmaking game behind, but it looks like the beatsmith is reunited with his MPC. I was always a big Shawn J fan - since the days of Rawkus. The other night the infamous Benji B played Shawn's latest track [Listen]
In other news, Threadless has resurrected a whole line of my favorite tees. The picture above is from a classic print BlandBand by Superswede. The colors are too funky, and who could front on the nostalgia of an old school cassette tape. The last couple of days I've noticed a lot of talk about cassettes. Well here's another reference for you analog addicts [Threadless]

Music. Big Boi & Floetry

Music. Big Boi Album Preview: This November Big Boi presents his all star crew on Got Purp? It's an energy infused journey into the musical soul we've grown to love from our Southern brethren. You can preview the entire album [Here]
Music. Floetry Album Preview: Don't forget to check for our Philly fam-a-lam (but originally from the UK), Floetry, on November 8. Their album Flo'Ology is pretty dope. You've probably heard their single SupaStar featuring Common, well expect more of that goodness. Preview the album [Here]

Music. Sadat X - What did I do?

Music. Sadat X | What did I do?: When I was a lil' man, I had an imaginary girlfriend. Hey, we aren't called Dork for irony's sake. Anyway, when the imaginary girlfriend and I had an argument, I'd be like, "baby, you gotta love me or leave me alone." She'd say, "sh*t James, you know I love ya." Yes Brand Nubian gave a lil' dun like me, a nugget of wisdom. When real girls finally started to appreciate my weirdness and were willing to be in relationships with me, I tried to use Brand Nu's advice. Unfortunately, they usually just left me alone.
Now Sadat X is back on the solo tip and he has some advice for his fans. Next time your girlfriend complains or gets upset for reasons you don't completely understand, just say, "what did I do?" Trust me, it will work way better than Shaggy's "it wasn't me." Sadat X is having an album release party tonight at Opus 22 (559 W. 22, NYC), no cover and open vodka. It is going to be a swanky affair, but don't stay out too late, or you'll be singing this song to your girl. [Download]

Nas. Death Anniversary

Nas. Death Anniversary: If you ask me Nas is the greatest rapper out. Sure he hasn't surpassed the brilliance of Illmatic (though The Lost Tapes comes close), but no one else has either. What Nas has done is remain relevant over his 13 year career. How has he done it? The beef with Jay-Z helped a lot, but more than that, his music has kept him at the top.
While other rappers use ill-conceived business ventures and sponsorship to stay in the public eye, Nas puts out well written songs. These songs don't always end up making his albums, but they exist. Death Anniversary is the quintessential street song. It is provocative, poignant, and vividly illustrated. Don't believe me? Cold check it [Listen]

Impulsive! Revolutionary Jazz Reworked

Music. Impulsive! Revolutionary Jazz Reworked: The Verve Music Group has been cranking out some really great music. Their latest endeavor, Impulsive! Revolutionary Jazz continues their streak of audible goodness. The album possesses a collection of reworked songs from jazz heavyweights such as Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie, Pharoah Sanders, and Yusef Lateef.
If you were into Madlib's Shades of Blue, then you'll probably dig this jam. Guest production includes the likes of SA-RA, Rza, Mark De Culve-Lowe and Prefuse 73. Check out a few tracks below and be sure to pick up the album on October 25.

Music. Goapele's Mixtape

Music. Goapele's Mixtape: Goapele's single Closer is an office favorite. Dork's been a fan of her harmonies and refreshing production for some time. We're definitely looking forward to the release of her new album. In the meantime, I guess we'll have to enjoy her mixtape.
The mix contains remixs, old jams and new stuff that will hopefully create a buzz for her. One jawn that sticks out in particular is her version of Go by Common. I liked the original and her addition gives it a little more kick. Check it out [Go Remix f. Goapele]

Music. O.C. (Not The OC)
Music. O.C. (Not The OC): "You lack the minerals and vitamins, irons and the niacin / F**k who that I offend, rappers sit back I'm bout to begin / bout foul talk you sqwak, never even walked the walk / More less destined to get tested, never been arrested / My album will manifest many things that I saw, did or heard about..."
Times Up is one of those rare songs that are timeless. It has to be amazing to create a song that becomes an actual philosophy for some. Well, O.C. isn't done creating classics. His new album, Smoke and Mirrors, is a pretty solid effort. The lyricism is still there. His style brings you back to an era when being street and being smart weren't considered incongruous. Check out this smooth banger from the new album [This is me]

Audio. Dream Merchant

Audio. Dream Merchant: Yesterday was a crazy day. Mad work to be done, but we drudged through. At the end of it all we needed to crank something that would subside the aches of grinding. This early Little Brother track seemed to do the trick.
Dream Merchant is classic LB demonstrating early jedi maneuvers from 9th and his Fruity Loops software. As usual, Phonte skates along the beat as if it's second nature - like it was meant to be. But the most classic moment is at the very end when Phonte says, "because you get an F- for your poor performance." ha! That reminded me of the time when James, Russ and I were clowning about GI Joe and Destro's famous line - "You are a world class baffoon!" Remember when he used to say that to Cobra Commander. hhhhhhaaa! Alright I've lost it. I'm out. Til tomorrow. [Download | Dream Merchant]

Audio. Brick City Kids

Audio. Brick City Kids: This morning we were experiencing some technical difficulties, so if you saw this picture before we were ready, we apologize. The Brick City Skate shop is a classic joint located in Florida. But, seeing this pic reminded me of our aspirations here at Dork to start our very own skate team. Right now it's just Cool Russ and I, but we're growing - slowly but surely.
So! without further ado we announce the pre-pre-pre-announcement of our dreams to open a skate shop / skate team. We won't be called Brick City but if we were, this would be our team song. [Brick City Kids | Download]

Music. HVW8 Installation Crew

Music. HVW8 Installation Crew: Our affinity for HVW8's art is no mystery. We've talked about these cats in past posts. Their imagery is bananas. However, this time 'round they're bringing a batch of audible goodness to the party. GrooveAttack, has a nice write up about them discussing their latest release and the future endeavors of the crew:
"Following up on Ubiquity’s much hyped "Music Is My Art" 12" from late Spring 2005 is the full-length compilation of the same name and eclectic musical vibe compiled by the Montreal/Los Angeles-based HVW8 Art Installation crew. "Music Is My Art" is an album of next level electronic, soul and hip hop from around the world. Most of the tracks that appear on "Music Is My Art" were recorded exclusively for this release and capture the cross-section of worldwide talent that work closely with the collective." [Read more]

Music. Casual's Smash Rockwell

Casual Presents Smash Rockwell: My early high school years were well bred on the musical tunes of Casual and the Hiero crew. The beats were crazy. Casual's sly cadence over the rhythm was crazy. He was the man. In my opinion he got the best of Saafir back in the day with their infamous freestyle battles. He was no carbon copy.
Since then, he's continued to rock mics. But, folks have been hungry for more Casual madness. His long awaited follow up to "He Think He Raw", shows us that the wait was worth it. Cas brings 15 tracks of Heat, Heart, and pure Hiero. The new album features Tajai, Opio, Too Short, E-40, Richie Rich, Psalm One, and Young Zee. The album is in stores now. Check out some of the tracks below or [Buy]

Music. Jneiro Jarel's 3 Piece Puzzle

Jneiro Jarel's Three Piece Puzzle | October 18: Our pals over at Ropeadope* sent us the new album from one of Philly's finest, Jneiro Jarel. Homeboy has serious musical abilities. As an emcee, producer or singer, Jneiro's album Three Piece Puzzle is proof positive of his diverse talents.
Listening to the album will remind you of the best times during the 90s. And yet, the album still manages to present something new and refreshing. With guest appearances from Vinia Mojica, Rocque Won, Mel Owens, Dr. Who dat and others, there is enough variety in concepts and harmony to prevent it from being boring. Jneiro is a hit in the Netherlands and abroad. Hopefully the record will catch on domestically. Go out and support on October 18. [More]

Too Fresh! Brand New Video 'Ye & Rhyme

Brand New Video | Kanye and Rhymefest: Oh man! I love this video. We've been cranking Brand New at the Dork parties for a minute. Rhymefest has endless charisma, and his music absolutely charges a party. Dude has talent, poise and all those other good things. I hope this video sets things in motion. His new album is due out later this year and boast guest appearances from Tip, Common, Carl Thomas, Twista & Kanye.
If you've never heard or seen this dude, allow us the introduction. Sit back, relax and get ready. Our homeboy is about to set it on folks. Watch Brand New Video [Here]

Funk. Spider Harrison & Stones Throw

Spider Harrison & Stones Throw: A few years back, James hipped me to this Funky 16 Corners record put out by Stones Throw. Lately I've been revisiting it for samples, beats, etc. There is this one song that I can't seem to get past. Everytime I hear it, it puts me in a complete trance. The funk-o-meter is on ten with this one. All of the song's elements work so well together. You can't help but stop and take notice. The artist, Spider Harrison is a seriously dope individual. Stones Throw took some time to interview him and I thought that you all might be interested. Check the interview [Here] Download Spider Harrison's [Beautiful Day]

Music. Damian Marley & Lupe Fiasco

Damian Marley Interview: Over the weekend I was listening to the radio and heard the original sample from Damian Marley's latest heater, Welcome to Jamrock. The deejay did a fine job of mixing the new and old, which ultimately made the new version sound more monstrous. Jamrock carries so much weight. It's got it all - message, energy, passion & a heavy heavy bass line. Recently, Damian sat down to discuss his life, family and the new album. [View Interview | Website]

Instrumental Album. Dilla's the coolest!

Welcome to Detroit Instrumentals: Until Dilla's new album, The Shining, hits stores later this year featuring Madlib, Pharoahe Monch, Guilty Simpson & others, we'll have to hold onto these instrumentals*. I remember the first time WTD hit my headphones. I was caught in the rapture. The drum programming on this album is so phenomenal. I often wondered how did the Ummah not work. I know this is a tangent, but consider this... They should form a new Ummah - Tip, Ali and Dilla should still be there, but this time 'round they should bring on Madlib. Then they could record like a zillion records - recruit Ghost, Doom, Quence, Ye and Slim Thug to hold down the lyrics. Then I could fill up my ipod so that I'll be good for the next 20 years. ha! I guess a cat can dream. At least Ye's album makes you feel that way.

Hedcheq, Loft Party & Black Star
Hedcheq: These are some nefarious cats operating on some questionable moral turpitude. ha! I haven't heard the term "moral turpitude" since school. But, that's how they describe themselves. I came across their work a few weeks ago and have been a fan ever since. The pic above was an ode to the coveted and beloved Jordans, however they've done some other noteable work. Their choice of color, lines and mediums are always striking. I've never seen realism manipulated so well. You can view more of their work [Here | Buy their work & read the details here]
Loft Party: TurntableLab, Mark Ronson and Qtip are back at it again. Thursday July 28, they're hitting the world with some more of their jump and funk audible goodness. Get ready for a classic NYC Loft Party. Tickets are on sale at the lab. It looks like a smashing time. I'm sure the dork crew will be in attendance. [Details]
The Proud (live): Everytime I think we have every single Black Star recording released and unreleased, one of our friends shows up with another pleasant surprise. Remember Nkiru Books - the BK Book store owned by Mos and Kwe? They used to have shows there during the height of the Rawkus Renaissance. Well, here's a live performance from one of our favorite duo's. Thanks Alan!

Streamlined Direction & Extra Abstract

The last couple of weeks at Dork have been really great. James and I are mastering our path and figuring out ways to streamline the site. Although the growth has been positive, we're trying to speed things up around these parts. We want steroid like growth without the steroids. ha!
Since we've been an open book from day one, why stop here. Next month we'll be introducing some new features to the site while making information more accessible to the reader. Some changes will include a recommendation section - where we'll highlight all the cool stuff being sent our way; interviews on a larger scale; and more photos. If you have any suggestions on things you'd like to see at Dork Mag, please feel free to email us.
Extra Abstract: Sometimes artists go unrecognized and perhaps it's deserved. I guess it's the reality of entertainment, marketing and art in general. But, this is one instance that I'll never be able to comprehend. Mad Skillz has been crushing things ever since the Nod Factor. Homey has lyrics for days, but over the past couple of years hasn't garnered the kind of attention he deserves. I was listening to a few of my old favorites the other day and came across this track, which features Large Pro, Tip and Skillz. Now that's a classic & "we're about to bring em out..."

Waxpoetics & the Corners Remix

This weekend was a blast. Before I jump into the update madness, I wanted to extend a mega-shout to... my homeboys James and Russ for making the trip out to Philly (Russ you are a genius and James good looking on the 3000+ songs), Luke for incorporating me in his fly comic book (I dig the way you captured my beard on the giraffe), Liz for the tour and book of art, Moms for watching the little one while we went bi-state (NY and Philly - 2 event / 2 cities), and everyone who came out to Climax for the Drawl Squad and Dork event. Those guys can pack a place - great job Nick & Jamo (Pictures are on the way).
Waxpoetics: Last Friday I stopped by Tower Records to catch up on the latest and came across the sneaky release of WaxPoetics' spring issue. I love this magazine. You may remember me questioning its direction in the past, but it appears to be back on track. They have some great articles and interviews in this one - plus a fantastic continuation on the Jimmy McGriff piece. [WaxPoetics: website]
Audio Goodness: When I heard rumors floating around that Common, Scarface and Mos would be remixing the Corners, I couldn't wait to hear it. In terms of description abilities, they couldn't have picked a better cast. The only other cats I would have liked to see on there would have been AZ or Ghost, but now I'm just being selfish. The track is amazing and Scarface definitely goes for his. This is sure to attract attention for Comm and his latest release Be.

Organized Konfusion, M.A.S.K. & Claudio

Organized Konfusion: Without question, spring is my favorite season of the year. Although some parts of the country have been hit by Old-Man-Winter's left over funk - I'm hoping I can usher in the warm season with this throw back song. Bounce, featuring OK & Qtip, was a spring time smash. It's one of the few hidden gems from the Low Down Dirty Shame soundtrack. While listening to it the other night, the blaring horns in the intro took me right back to '94. I remember my homeboy Scott and I used to crank this jawn on our way to crosstown futbol matches. Of course we would lay a whoopin' on unsuspecting rivals while this song played in the back of our minds, but that's besides the point (Sidenote: Big ups to his Cobra's for winning their under-5 soccer match last weekend. They took it to the other squad with a 4-0 victory). Peep the song and summon those spring time good feelings... [Download | More info]
Claudio Parentela: One of my favorite aspects of working with Dork is the people. James and I have been fortunate enough to meet some of the coolest, innovative and expressive cats imaginable. Claudio is another person that we have had the good fortune to meet through this work. His art is extra cool and I think you'll find it interesting. His ink drawings collide shock, vulnerablility and innocence all at once. Check out our feature spot on Claudio Parentela. [View Gallery]

Marcy Playground, Madlib, Real Madrid

Back in the summer of 1998 or 99 I remember having my television's alarm clock set to wake me up for work. The wake-up station of choice was Mtv. It went off at 5:30am every morning.
I had a great routine. Wake up. Look at the television. Watch one video and then get out of bed. But every morning began to feel like Ground Hog Day. I was always in this dream-like state when I watched that one video, and it always happened to be the same video. At first I didn't know the name of the song or even pay any mind to it. But, as time went on, it remained - subliminally playing in the background of whatever I was doing. At work, staring at the computer *The song's playing*. Riding home on the train *The song's playing*. Eating dinner with the fam and watching syndicated episodes of Frasier *The song's still playing*. This is probably the most hypnotic song on the face of the earth and once I started paying attention to it - I realized that I actually liked it.
It's not one of those annoying songs that usually get stuck in your brain like Let's Get Physical by Olivia Newton John or anything (no offense Olivia). It's actually pretty good. So here it is... This is definitely a classic. Unfortunately the band vanished into obscurity. If you know otherwise - hip me to their latest.

Classic Dilla Interview, SK8 Graph, Apple 1 DVD Jon 2

More skateboard antics above - Andy Jenkins and Tony Larson design another ridiculous board. There's something about that bat that stays in my mind. I don't know what it is, but it sticks.
In addition to this week's skateboard madness, we've got another guerilla download for you. This week we present one part of a seven part series of interviews with the Beat Maestro himself, Jay Dilla. Talk about a podcast?! I landed this from a friend last year and wanted to pass it on to our readers. It'll only be posted for a few days, so get it while you can. I wish I knew who was conducting the interview, but it's fantastic. Jay talks about Madlib, their friendship and beat jacking...

Post Hiatus & Audio Tuesdays

Dork took a little hiatus after the last party to recoop for this week's madness. Last Thursday was a blast. Cool folks came through to hang out, eat some good food and hear great music. Big shout to Jason, Jeff and Ian for coming through and rocking the tables.
Audio Tuesday: This week we bring to you a remix that barely caught any attention but certainly deserved to - Raphael Saadiq's YOU remixed by Jay Dee. It has all the signature Jay Dee sounds, deep kicks, a crazy snare and those filtered subtleties we've all grown to love. This happens to be one of my all time favorite songs. The replay value is endless. (If you miss Audio Tuesday's in the future, you can always download them from our download click right below.)
