DM: How was it working with the skateboarders and was that your
first time filming skating?
Chike: The skate communities are so tight, the whole skating
thing was crazy. It’s almost like a fraternity. They will
embrace and show each other love even if they are complete strangers.
The Mos Def video we did (Ghetto Rock) had a lot of skateboarding
in it. We learned a lot about skateboarding.
DM: So which skateboarders were on the trip?
Chike: Adelmo Jr. Jackson Curtin, Karl Watson, Rob Gonzalez,
Chico Brenes, Rodrigo Petersen and Raul Navarro. They’re
all big time, professional skaters – they have their own
skateboards and shit that kids go crazy and spend a lot of money
for. They all have pretty big sponsors, it was real cool tho.
DM: Did you guys learn to skate?
Chike: Coodie already knows how.
Coodie: We didn’t really skate too much, we rented bikes.
While they were skateboarding we were riding the bikes and filming
them.
Chike: Oh yeah and Coodie and one of the skaters collided –Coodie’s
camera was broken, but Coodie broke the skater’s ribs!
Coodie: I would say he broke his ribs. It’s on camera,
he was coming straight at me and I thought he was gonna jump
off the board like they always do. He was sidelined in Paris,
until we got to Barcelona. When he got back to the States he
found out his ribs was broke. Sorry.
