LB: The insect names are derived from what we call Insect Theory which is all about communalism. You can study insects—ants, bees, whatever, and see how they work for the good of the community. That’s something that we as humans can and should learn from. I kept the name Ladybug because I wanted to keep something that would be familiar to my audience and also to carry on insect theory because it’s still relevant. Mecca is just who I am. I’ve always been Mecca.

DM: I read that you hooked up with the brothers from Digable when you all were attending college in Massachusetts.

LB: Where did you hear that? No, that’s not how we met. We met on the music scene, the east coast scene. We met as a group—all of us --- for the first time in Philly. We just started talking and we really agreed musically, we had similar beliefs and similar music taste and it just clicked really well.

DM: So you guys are about to do a reunion tour right? How did that come about?

LB: I was walking down West Fourth Street and I ran into Ishmael and we were like, hey wassup and then he ran into Doodlebug and… no just playin, it didn’t happen like that. We were open to working together so basically we got on the phone and just said, “Let’s do this.”

DM: That’s great. Will there be another album for you guys? Are you going on tour?

LB: Definitely, there will definitely be another album, we’ll be taking the ProTools and Logic on the road. I’m definitely going to do a tour as soon as I finish the Digable Tour.

I actually recently did a show at The Knitting Factory, with my band, Dark Matter. Actually I’ll be performing my songs during the Digable reunion as well.
