DJ Language: Deejaying on Moonbase 34.91b....
By James Oyedijo

The only way to become a great musician is to gig. There's no way around it. The more you play to actual living souls the better you get. With that in mind, you can understand what makes DJ Language the awesome musician that he is. He spins weekly at Tribeca Grand, and Triple Crown. His NegroClash event @ APT with cohorts, Lindsey and Duane are lengendary. The man has even spun in Dubai! Now he's released an album, Real Music For Real People. Through the magic and mystery of the interweb, we were able to track Language down for an interview.

DM: What do you think real people are looking for when they listen to music?

Language: Hopefully something that moves them in some way – that’s what I look for in music, and I suppose that’s my vague definition of soulfulness as well. My favorite music elicits a tangible physical reaction – tingles, chills – all that. At the end of the day. I think people want to hear music that makes them happy and makes life nicer. As my man Twilite Tone says, we’re just trying to beautify the world with with music.

DM: What are your earliest memories of music?

Language: Hanging out and listening to records in the attic of our house in Chicago, where my mom had her painting studio, stereo and all of her records. The first song that I remember being aware of and obsessed with was “Start Me Up” by the Rolling Stones – I would wait for it to come on the radio and sing along with it. Still love the Stones to this day, too.

DM: When you are diggin for records, what makes you say "Okay I love this"?

Language: It could be anything from a great drum break, captivating sounds, great outfits and haircuts on the sleeve picture – any number of vague but compelling factors.
