Language: If you check the track listing, I think you’ll get a sense of the wide range of stuff on, everyone from Nas to Bugz In The Attic and Roy Ayers, to stuff by really amazing artists like Great Weekend, Black Spade. Natalie Gardiner, Spacek, and Maurice Fulton, whom people may not be as familiar with but definitely should be. I had stepped to BBE with the idea of doing a sort of fully-licensed version of the Fader magazine’s Suite 903 CDs, which are great samplers of new soul music, but are promo-only. I had done one of the first ones for them a few years back, and although the response to it was great, I was frustrated that a lot of people I knew who had heard about it couldn’t get their hands on a copy. Luckily, BBE had already set plans in motion for the Real Music For Real People series, and they were very receptive to plugging me into it. And I have to give them props for being supportive of my vision of the project – like I say in the liner notes, the only thing the mix was limited by was my taste. So far the response has been really positive gratifying, and I’d like to think that that’s partly due to the freedom they afforded me. In essence, the CD is me saying, “here’s some of my favorite music right now – I hope you dig it.”
