Ursula Rucker: The Ma’at Mission
By: Navani Otero

How does one achieve Ma’at? As foreign as that word may sound, it is actually a concept everyone is familiar with and probably struggles with – achieving balance. If you are Ursula Rucker, that concept is the foundation of a new album as well as a new phase in life. How does one transition from a Supa Sista to a Ma’at Mama? You grow a little bit, mature a little more, take on more responsibilities and you evolve.

Ursula Rucker has been evolving for the last 12 years, sharing her growth openly and honestly with us every step of the way. Here she tells us why Ma’at plays a crucial role in both her art and life right now:

What is the concept behind the title of your album Ma'at Mama?

Ever since college Ma'at has always been something I would think about from time to time. I really love the concept, love the word, and love what it means. So, I thought it would be cool to apply that to what I do at this time. Then you know, add the mama to it, to bring Supa Sista full circle. The first album was Supa Sista and now I am a little bit older and I have a couple more kids. The whole concept is balance, which I am always after and I try to always be truthful and honest with my art, and make it trickle into other areas of my life.

How do you go about finding a balance between your career and being a mom?

It's hard, hence the concept. Maybe if I put it out there I might get some balance at some point. It's tough, it's a juggling act and luckily I have family and friends there to take up the slack. My husband as well takes care of the kids, so we try to make it work.
